So Android L is a pretty big deal, right?

the TLDR impression I'm getting is that it's kinda like AMD's metal. Performance improvements should be in the 50-100% range.

edit:

Oh wow, those are some nice screenshots.

Eh. I personally don't see it as a big deal for performance. I see it a big deal for bringing in additional changes and UI improvements.

Man, they gotta stop naming the versions after petty candy stuff. Make it more serious. I dunno, name it after species of aquatic mammals.

You can also just call it Android 5.0 if you're the type who gets hot and bothered about code names.

Replacing Dalvick with Art and the apparent ~35% battery life improvement is a very big deal.

Nah. Tongue in cheek naming conventions are a Linux tradition.

Awesome sauce! While I don't expect HTC to release 5.0 for the One, the XDA community absolutely will. If bold is true, it will be nice to only have to charge my phone once during the day. *not being sarcastic*

You can enable ART now if you want. Replacing it just means that any apps that don't have compatibility are screwed.

I'm not too hyped up about it because I don't use Nexus devices. I'll look forward to it in my Note 4 though.

That is an experimental version of ART and yes an even more experimental version than whats found in the preview of L

You better believe it, QueBert:

HTC is excited about the new features in the Android L release and we can’t wait to share them with you. We are committed to updating our flagship HTC One family as fast as possible as part of our HTC Advantage program. We will begin rolling out updates to the HTC One (M8) and HTC One (M7) worldwide within 90 days of receiving final software from Google, followed shortly thereafter by other One family members and select devices.

That's 35% for the Nexus 5, which based on Ars's initial reviews badly underperformed the G2 in the web browsing test even after adjusting for the different battery size.

It may just be that Google finally figured out what its partners were already doing.

I apologize. the 35% battery improvement is definitely a big deal, but I think the ART thing is more under the hood changes that fewer consumers will notice. UI changes and functionality additions are very important still because they're readily visible and usable to the average user.

The performance boost that ART will bring is easily noticeable. My 2013 N7 is definitely faster, and this is on a preview version of ART not much newer than what's in KitKat.

L is a big deal for everyone. Ignorant consumers get a much prettier and consistent looking OS. Those who are still relatively ignorant will notice how much smoother Android is whether they know what ART is or not. Developers have 5000+ new APIs to play with, and devs and OEMs are both benefiting from this extended preview period.

I'm still surprised how many people aren't "in-the-know" on an anandtech forum. The first chunk was painful to read. I did like the dig against Apple, though.

I think the large battery improvement comes from the queues synching of network requests in L. Wakelocks are the biggest part of battery consumption for idle use.

This is huge. Why did it take this long?

Looking forward to getting it pretty quickly on my Moto X and getting even more phenomenal battery life.

either it wasn't a priority, or required a lot of overhaul under the cover in dalvik (and wasn't possible without breaking a lot of other things)

looking forward for android L sources to drop...
