is it best to

- find a 290x @ a discount?

- wait for the 390x (i know the 8gb is useless)

- pay 650+ for 980ti's if you can find it in stock

i know the 980ti is fastest, but it's roughly $200 more than a 390x
looks like 290x prices are still above 300 with rebates from a quick look this morning

smart thing to do at this point?

Wait for the Fury (July 14th). Might be able to OC to FuryX performance for $100 less.
FuryX will come out next week and compete with the 980Ti pricewise, giving you another option there, while having the possibility of shaking up prices and users who buy the FuryX will OC to see how far the AIO can go.

Edit: Least, that's what I'm doing.

I think the window may be closing on 290x discounts. My personal theory is that the discounts come out when uncertainty is maximum, because that's when people stop buying and wait to decide. Vendors want to sell cards, so they use discounts to spur more demand when everyone is sitting around waiting to learn about new upcoming cards.

But now that the cards are announced, the uncertainty/mystery is gone, people learn that the 290 series was a great deal and try to buy it, so no reason for vendors to continue the discounts.

so it looks like pick up a 390x for $430
or pick up a 980ti for $670

is the 980ti worth the extra $250 is the question for me now hmm

I am not sure why you are comparing 390X and 980 Ti because they are completely different price/performance/market segment.

TBH the 290X second-hand is a pretty good buy (esp upto 1080p/1440p at a push)

There is 0 logic in what I see on egg today. 2 year old 4gb 290x for 345$ and 2 days old 8gb 390 for 330$. Yeah, yeah, vendors will sure sell a lot 290x with that price
They should put 200$ on 290 and 250$ on 290x if they still want to sell this 2 year old 200 series

This is getting old. wait , wait ,wait ,for what?
People waited for Fury and got what? A 980ti.

Try reading the threads before you reply. People wisely waited 3 weeks for the FuryX, and now can confidently buy an aftermarket 980TI OC that will be the best $650 card. If a new card was 3+ MONTHS away I'd agree, no use waiting. It heavily depends on the timelines and their goals.

The Fury (non x) is 2 weeks and this guy is being price conscious. For me, the next card will most likely be for VR, so I can easily wait.

so it looks like pick up a 390x for $430
or pick up a 980ti for $670

is the 980ti worth the extra $250 is the question for me now hmm

But the real question for the OP should be, what monitor do you have? Maybe you should stick with the lower card and invest in a new monitor which will outlast any video card.

i have a dell U2711
i play everything @ native 2560x1440
games are starting to lag now which is why i figured it was about time
to build a new pc.
i guess in the long run, the $250 isn't much over the lifetime of the box
