News with detailed photographs:

Also buried with it were 10 gallons of gasoline _ in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007 _ a case of beer, and the contents of a woman's handbag placed in the glove compartment: 14 bobby pins, a bottle of tranquilizers, a lipstick, a pack of gum, tissues, a pack of cigarettes, matches and $2.43.

That case of Beer was Schlitz. And I have no Idea why they would put tranquilizers in there? But I would love to see some one, preferably a dedicated Schlitz drinker pop one of those cans open and have a cold one. Then let us know if the beer (brand) had changed much over the decades.

I love how they thought combustion engines might be obsolete... haha
good thing we fought all those wars since then and aside from computers are lacking severely in living up to what the past thought we'd do...

Sounds like it was unsealed in the same condition it was buried in.

And they allowed rain to get into the container, up to the fenders, less than 24 hours before the unveiling? :disgust::thumbsdown:

Hmm, the thing wasn't buried as deep as I thought. Too bad the water got to it.

The deeper it's buried, the more likely water will penetrate the casket or car it's self.

Besides, the people who created the vault probably did a halfassed job building it. They knew that they would probably be retired or dead by the time someone opened the vault to check on their work

They did the best job they could given the technology avilable to them at that time. If it were to be done today, a plastic liner would have been used.

EDIT: I should also add, the concrete encasement is watertight or it would not have been able to hold three or four feet of standing water. The problem most likely lies in a small crack that may have developed somewhere where in seal where the lid meets the encasement.

hmmm, honestly. 50 years? Thats not that long ago. I would be more interested in how this would have worked 100 years after it was buried; then there would be no one alive from that generation at all. guaranteed. Also, in our day of archiving; 50 years will be remembered.

still interesting, though.

Why didn't they make the vault from steel plate welded all the way around? Concrete isn't really hermetic. Was drylock around then?

Man, everyone in 2007 is really fat...

i came to that realization once again last night while watching a show on the History Channel about the building of the road from Canada through to Alaska. EVERYONE was thin!

i blame fast food and technology.

If they try and start it, they are complete dumbasses.

But they have the hotrod tv show guy dude doing it!!

It just needs a new underbody... engine...... transmission...... fluids....... seals........ surely finding those parts for a 50 year old car shouldn't be too hard...............

Baaaaahahahaha!!!!!!!!

Yep, when most of us (ATOT'ers) were tots this car could have easily been found on any bargain used car lot. It would have been the modern equal of a 1985'ish Mustang or Taurus.

I wonder if any of the people who were there when it was buried will be present when it is uncovered?

Wow I wonder what it would've looked like if it were buried with no "protection". Especially in high clay soil.

Kind of scary to think about gravesites too. :Q

The vault was briefly opened Wednesday so hazardous materials crews could inspect the contents, which also included 10 gallons of gasoline and 5 quarts of motor oil that had been placed inside in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007.

Excavators found water halfway up on the car?s fenders and evidence water could have been to the top of the vault at one point, said Art Couch, who is heading up the unearthing project.

Yup. I attended an opening of a time capsule, several years ago. The funeral vault they used was full of water.

Cremate me, plz.
