So back in 1957 they buried a brand new 1957 Plymouth....

This isn't necessarily true.

As long as the water table is high enough, it will fill up with water. Some parts of the country can't have basements because the water table is only a few feet deep and the basement would fill up with water.

Aside from the cost, why not just "bury" it above ground? Put the container in a container, concrete in between. No risk of the contents degrading from being exposed.

This is going to be a train wreck.

The vault was briefly opened Wednesday so hazardous materials crews could inspect the contents, which also included 10 gallons of gasoline and 5 quarts of motor oil that had been placed inside in case internal combustion engines became obsolete by 2007.

Excavators found water halfway up on the car?s fenders and evidence water could have been to the top of the vault at one point, said Art Couch, who is heading up the unearthing project.

I was there tonight, and it was not worth the time at all. It was the most anticlimactic event ever, and the car and most of its contents were ruined. Just a bunch of rust and old people talking about it like it was the most amazing thing ever. Like a previous poster said, alot of what they put in it is still used today or found in most of our grandparents homes.
It just wasn't old enough to elicit any kind of awe factor in me or most of the people that went that I spoke with. As far as I could tell, the only people that got a real kick out of it were the ones who were there when it was buried (mostly as children of course!)
A major disappointment.
My 2 cents.

What really suprises me is the enthusiasm the hosts of the show have for the unearthing of that awful looking rust bucket.

Are there any pictures of the actual car available yet?

How they didn't know that massive rusting was inevitable... I don't know. Over 50 years, water will get anywhere it wants to.

That case of Beer was Schlitz. And I have no Idea why they would put tranquilizers in there? But I would love to see some one, preferably a dedicated Schlitz drinker pop one of those cans open and have a cold one. Then let us know if the beer (brand) had changed much over the decades.

Honestly, the contents were somewhat anticlimactic. Granted, it was only 50 years ago, but every single one of those items are still used today in pretty much the same fashion. I suppose they expected far more advances in everyday items in these 50 years.
