So back in 1957 they buried a brand new 1957 Plymouth....

Probably because we know what smoking has done for our health since the 50's.

Huh?

You don't have to be fat if you don't smoke.

Besides, many of today's fat oafs that don't take care of themselves are fat AND smoke.

Some of those fatties who smoke have valid med conditions! (very few, but some)

I somehow do not believe they will be starting this car. Looks like Coddington's show will need to be cancelled, unless they can find another brand new 57 Belvedere laying around somewhere.

This is f@cked up. They should have been more careful.

Is it just me or is this video not working?

it cuts off after like 15 minutes

And why can't they realize it's 2007 and not 1997 when it comes to audio compression. All that drama over such a mess is still funny.

Demand for the video is very high, so I assume they are cutting the audio back to save on bandwith.

They did the best they could given the technology available at that time. However, the one mistake in my opinion was to cover the car in Aluminum foil. That allowed water to creep in but also made it tough for the water to escape, hence letting the moisture stay in contact with the steel for very long periods of time.

All of this has got me thinking of the (circa 1937) man whom built a time capsule complete with a car and relics from the 1930's, that is scheduled to be opened in about 8113. I wonder how his car is holding up?

That's a great idea except they did not have plastic in 1957.

They started making plastics in the late 1800's. Nylon was already popular in the 1940's.

I never knew that. I was always told by the elders in my family they did not have plasitcs as children. However, I did know nylon was used as a parachute material during World War II.

Another interesting tidbit is that the hula hoop came out in the same year, 1957, and it was made of plastic.

But you're right that during that time, they still used wax paper and paper bags for most things, and other things were made of metal and wood. To tell you the truth, stuff was built better back then.

The next time some old fogey tells you that "they don't make things like they used to", throw this back in their face. They couldn't even make a waterproof vault.
