There was a thread on here earlier about Haswell 4770K vs a 3930K, but I'm glad I went for a hexa core:

http://www.techspot.com/review/670-metro-last-light-performance/page6.html

Metro: Last Light is the third game this year that can actually use 6 cores - and I'm certain next gen consoles will want more cores and more threads; all those fancy new extensions won't really matter much for Haswell in the end anyway.

So, despite LGA 2011 being rather creaky and old, if you don't want like the look of Haswell, I wouldn't hesitate and get LGA 2011. Plenty of grunt for another 3 years until Broadwell hexa-core/octa-core with DDR4. And a perfect match for my Titan.

Actually, I am not sure that benchmark shows use of six cores in LL. After all it is gpu limited for the top 3 processors, and non HT 3570k still beats 8 core FX. 4 core HT 3770k is tied with hex core, but both are gpu limited.

But still, I would agree if you can afford it 3930k will assure you of having the best performance for quite some time. Toms hardware also tested Haswell vs hex core intel and showed hex core still very much ahead in heavily MT productivity benchmarks.

Initial overclocking results - pushed the multiplier up to 40, fixed voltage at 1.175v, everything else on "Auto" and running Prime 95. So far, solid. Error at 1.170. Temps are around 60 Celsius max.

Congratulations.

But I am not really sure I understand that buy decision from a price/performance standpoint. The 3930K is 500 euros here, and a 3570K is 200 euros. That's 300 euros difference. I also expect that your 2011 motherboard is 50 euros/dollars more expensive than a 1155 motherboard.

So you spent $350 extra, to get 1 more frame/sec than me (3570K) ?
And that is with a Titan card. Any slower card would be more gpu-limited, and the different cpus might not even see that 1 frame difference anymore. I just don't get it.

For gaming you have a valid point. 3930k is faster in heavily MT productivity apps though.

3930k is straight up better because it has 6 cores, and that's awesome. The name looks awesome. The chip is huge, and that makes it awesome. Nothing is more beast than this chip, and that makes it awesome. People want it, but can't buy it yet us elites already have it, and that makes it awesome.

Still testing Prime95, got rounding errors just under 2hrs with my 3930K at 4.1GHz and 1.23v, upped the vCore to 1.25v and testing again, hopefully should be stable. Max temps were 71 celsius.

^ That one benchmark in Crysis 3, the 3960X was roughly 10FPS faster than the 3770K. The 3930K would be very close behind. In a year or two, I wouldn't be surprised if quads will be running out of puff in grunty games, necessitating 6+ cores.

I'm thinking about picking one up too, from the Intel program. I think at around $100 for the CPU I can't beat it.
