What's your budget for the upgrade?

If it's only ~$100, then I think your only viable option is the center upgrade unless you're willing to save up more. If you have $300-$400 to work with, then you could get a solid sub and then wait to find a good deal on a matching center to go with the R50s.

Either way, I would be using 4 of your old speakers to use as surrounds and rears if you have mounting locations for them in the room.

yeah my dad put those speakers up when i was 11
but the new center will be on top of the speaker

on top of the TV you mean?

or on top of its self

This is one of the best subs you can get all around right now for the price, also if you want more of a budget minded sub then the ED mentioned above are solid choices. The AVS subs can have a long waiting period, but they are worth it.

A2-300 from eD for $315 shipped will be one of your best bets. Stick it in that back corner between the bench and the couch where the little pots/vase thingies are and that should work out well for corner loading.

Until i order that one, where should the bass port face on my current sub? towards a wall ?

Don't use an RCA cable. Just run coax (like for a TV) and use an RCA adapter. You are looking at like $15 for 50 feet of coax(already shielded) and $2 for the adapters. If you can do it with 25 feet, even better. Plus you can use white with RCA and blend it in better with the trim.

As for the port, the eD subs are down firing with a port that fires either to the left or the right of the face with the amp. I'd point the port towards the couch so that it isn't aiming at a wall or out into the middle of the room.

But without actually testing out the best place for the sub while actually in the room, I'm just guessing on the best placement.

The RTi8's are a MAJOR upgrade to the R50s. You are looking at a $150(R50's) pair of speakers vs. a $400+ pair.

Plus the RTi8's are timbre matched to the CSi3/5 center channels. Those are $150-$250 center channels.

If you get any noise in a sub it's likely due to poor grounding issues with the sub's amp over any cable issues.

I dont know if you are set on brand new gear but if you wanna save cash dont forget this gem. You can get high end gear at amazing deals, its how I ended up getting my NAD receiver for $499 brand new even.

A big  to this!! Here's a sub by Monitor Audio, that's right in the OP's price range. My only concern would be where do you send it if it breaks? Monitor is a British company, but they make some good stuff. Unless you go used, I don't think you will find a better sub for $300.

You should also check ebay, and craigslist. Ebay has quite a few audio dealers that sell stuff there. There is nothing wrong with getting a used sub either, you just have to do your homework.

There are a lot more options at the RTi8 budget level than the R50 budget level.

Looks like Fry's / Outpost has them for $300/pair though? That's pretty good

I'm not so sure that's the best way to go (ASW100 specifically I mean... I have no problem buying used stuff and both my subs are used). I looked briefly for ASW100 reviews and didn't see much about it. I know there are Monitor Audio dealers in the US so I think you could take it to one of them to find an authorized repair facility.

I'd have a hard time recommending that sub which appears to be aimed at keeping a very small footprint (which doesn't seem to be a bit concern for the OP). Not that specs are the be all and end all of sub performance, but

ASW100
Used + no warranty?
$300 + shipping
10"
120watts
22 pounds
27Hz - 180Hz (no qualifiers... couldn't find it on Monitor Audio's site)

Elemental Designs A2 300
New + 5 year transferable warranty?
$315 shipped
12"
250watts
72 pounds
18Hz-100Hz (+/- 3dB)

The ED looks like a lot more sub for the money

I'm going to try and ignore that you said this. $300 a pair is a decent deal. The cherry veneer looks great in person too.

....must resist....

(And of course if you're ordering from Fry's / Outpost with shipping, try ordering each speaker individually rather than as a pair to save on shipping )

If the budget is still $150 for a pair, then I think you're kind of out of good options?

So the R50s are going back now?

I assumed in the beginning that this was your system, but this is a family system that has to meet the requirements of your parents too? What are the requirements now?

If this is a system you're buying, would it be possible to move it to your room and start your own without these requirements?

well i convinced my mom because the r50's hide all the wires in the back
the only other problem would be no bookshelf surrounds
