I don't think people have as much problem with the Grenade Launcher as you making it sound as if it takes some amazing degree of skill to use one.....

Honestly, you might as well say it takes amazing skill to rack up kills in Q3 with a Rocket Launcher....

There's no straight grenade launcher probably because it was overpowered in pretty much any game that had them just to be disabled by server admins. SoF2 and even GoldenEye had them, they were bad but they were still harder to use than the M203 in COD4 (due to an actual flight arc, projectile speed and lower splash damage).

You're saying the AIMS-20 launcher and MGL are harder to use than the M203? They're like explosive bullets! It doesn't take much skill to fire an M203 into a crowd down the street, but it does to fire it into a window 200 feet away.

I was referring to the MM-1 in SoF2 and whatever the nade launcher was called in N64 GoldenEye. My point was that it would actually take skill with those weapons to fire through an elevated window at 200 feet since those weapons actually had a uniform arc which limited its range and accuracy, unlike the M203 which hits its peak and then flattens out on a fixed trajectory without any drift (RPG-7 for instance has both vertical and horizontal drift in COD4).

I give little credence to those that complain so much about grenades or the launcher, particularly those dimwitted enough to add martyrdom to the mix. It's an ability that in effect plants a sign which says come stand by me and in 5 seconds you will be dead. Except for the few examples I discussed before, you have to be a crappy player that you get killed by standing next to the spot marked stand here so you can be killed.

That isn't the point. Everybody but everybody who plays the game knows to run away when they see the nade symbol or hear the sound. The point is that several of the maps are in highly enclosed spaces where getting away is sometimes difficult, either for space reasons or simply because chances are you just run onto a spot where another person has just died and inevitably dropped another grenade. If martydom doesn't frustrate you... I envy you. Drop in on the official CoD4 forums, you'll see that martydom, probably above even the noob tube, is the most complained about feature of the game.

And for other weapons being unbalanced/overpowered. If weapons existed as such, why wouldn't every player in a match be using them.

For several reasons.

1. Not everybody has access to them
2. Not everybody tries all the guns. Some just stick to their red dot carbine and never bother with the others, thus not realising how OP they are
3. Using OP guns just gets boring.

The latter was my own reason for stopping using the P90. If I use that gun then 99 times out of 100 I will dominate the game. Its just a guarantee of finishing top with an insane kill ratio. You can snipe accross maps with it and up close it is unbeatable. On some of the more open maps it can be tolerated, but on the more enclosed ones its just unstoppable. It was great while I was a lower level and was XP whoring because I wanted all the unlocks. Once I got them all it just got boring very very fast. I'd sooner pick up 15 kills in a round with a bolt action sniper rifle than 70 with the P90. Plus you answer your own question:

You see, that's the funny thing. I haven't used the launcher since I picked up mt first red dot site because of the limitations of it.

Once you realise that the nade launcher is good for a few quick kills but then leaves you stranded with a gun without a decent scope, you move on. It's a noob weapon - it gives you some quick guaranteed kills, but once you learn the game two or three kills isn't enough - you want to be on 10 kill streaks with your red dot or your AKOG. Doesnt change the fact that its frustrating as hell to get killed by one, because you know that its a one shot kill from medium range where pin point aim is not necessary. Like I said, its the CoD2 shotgun all over again.

After playing it for a few days, I'm not liking it much anymore. The calling in air strikes and helicopters really kills the game for me.

I just got this game...I have not installed it yet. I only have a 7950 with an opty 165... How good will the play be? I have the Dell 20 inch FP that I run at 1600x1200... I am hoping for some XMAS hardware upgrades...I have the PNY GTS 8800 g92 coming tomorrow, but I am going to send it back. 300 bux for a gcard is crazy.... I can wait for a 8800gt to come in stock I guess for a great deal less...

sounds like a great deal of fun.

I currently play with the system in my rig and it's pretty smooth. Before I had the 8800 I had an evga 7950GT KO and although I had to go down in resolution it played about the same if I turned off shadows and tweaked a few other graphic settings. And also I'm on a 24" monitor.

Don't know if anyone has done this tactic with the sniper mission hiding from the army in the field mission, but it completely negates the need to do it the "right" way....

Run back into the building (I climbed the tower and watched for few minutes).

Then when all is past I crawled across the road (there were two vehicles stopped down it but nothing happened) and ran to capt to continue.

So I got it today via Steam and IMHO this is one big giant grenade spam game on very claustrophobic maps. Sorry I like BF2 whole lot more then this game. Give me BF2's no vehicle servers on huge maps any day of the week over COD4.

IMO half the fun is lying in the field with soldiers walking by and tanks almost running over you. It might be fun to see just how big the convoy is, though.

This game would be downright awesome if there were NO grenades. It's to the point that I'd rather there be no grenades than to go on how it is. Martyrdom just adds to the idiocy of it all.

I get tired of dying, and the kill cam showing some guy spawning and chucking his 3 grenades randomly across the map.

I guess that wouldn't happen to me if I weren't such a n00b.

Hence why I like TF2 for truly awesome multiplayer. Except cp_gravelpit which is akin to COD4 in its grenade and rocket spam.

Otherwise  for COD4

Funny how a p90 just comes up in about every game mp or sp. I picked up one retrying FarCry and noticed its fast rate fire.
I could never get into stuff like CS. I loved the openess and massive battles from Delta Force: Land Warrior.

stick to 20 man servers MAX and pubbing is ok.

i prefer 10-16 man servers for a better experience.

scrimmin 5v5 is a great time though, but i miss bigger more tactical maps as an option.

I reformatted my computer and lost all of my profile data

I made the bad assumption that my rank and achievements were store online a la BF2. Bad assumption...

If you just want your rank and stuff back, do a google for COD4 multiplayer profiles.

And yes, COD4 stores all rank/perk data locally

Bunny hoppers with close enconter shot guns. Grenade fest throwers.

Those are only the two I really cant stand.

A silenced AK47u with deep impact and steady side arm aim I find the most deadly. Because at close enconters you have no time to aim and you can still meanuver with it on the side.

I got CoD4. Still playing the Single player, which is pretty well done, FPS single player just don't entertain me that much I suppose, but the graphics are...uhh...very graphic.

I noticed in multiplayer its all about the gun you choose (on a particular map) and the team you're on. You'll get good after a week or two, but the gun and team are very important.

Sub-machine guns are great for close enconters . Semi-autos are great for medium distance and sometimes long distance. Shutgun + and knife attacks are good for really close enconters but only works on one or two maps. Sniping only works well if your assualt team is keeping you protected. Though with the dead silence perk its actually quite good for stealth knife attacks or if you carry the two main weapon perk.

I hope patch 1.5 bring out a few new maps. Most games usually update maps for multi-player, so I hope they make them more large. These maps can really only fit 24-26 players max. After that it's just a grenade and spray fest.

Who else thinks COD 4 is amazingly well coded?

The load times on my machine are incredible. I can go from Windows into a multiplayer game in less than 30 seconds. It's probably 90 seconds for TF2.

Map load times are less than 10 seconds.

Amazing. It makes you wonder why TF2 and Battlefield 2 are such pigs when clearly modern games don't need to be.

I happened to play Crash quite a bit the last few days, and it is quite an unbalanced map I think, or the spawn system is really bad. If you play on the Marines team, and your team is half decent, you can bottle up the tangos around their spawn and shoot them like fish in a barrel. I havent seen any other map so unbalanced.

Agree 100%. From clicking on the desktop MP icon, browsing the favorites list, selecting a server and actually starting gameplay is one of the quickest in a MP FPS I've seen. No crappy splash screens and ads like in UT3. The gameplay is damn smooth too; no lag in any of the maps.
