Finished the SP game night before last, and really enjoyed it a lot. Maybe a little short but I don't doubt there will be more soon, for $.

The MP game... not having such a great experience. I just can't get it to run smoothly. I did the SP game in 1680 x 1050 using the shader model 2.0 tweak and moderate graphics settings on a 7600GT. Was very smooth unless there were dense areas of smoke and fog, etc.

Playing MP I just cannot get rid of the lag, regardless of what server I am playing on. I have the graphics cranked back to 1280 x 1024 at moderate settings just to take them out of the picture. Panning around with the mouse is slow, and the view lags movement by a fair amount. When I can get my weapon trained and get a few rounds off the killcam later shows me pointing the barrel into thin air from the enemy's POV. The killcam also shows me being shot through walls and the solid edges around windows, that sort of thing. Something is definitely off. Going to mess with it again tonight.

i'm getting a lot of lag on all servers and so are the other people playing. i don't think its your PC.

also, you can shoot through walls, even more so if you use the Deep Impact perk. there are very few things the bullets will not penetrate with that perk on.

What I'm seeing still looks like either lag or a collision detection issue, since the walls are not taking any damage.

Any good tips on settings for COD4?
System specs are:
C2D e6400 @ 3.04GHz
Gigabyte P35-DS4 Rev2
2GB Crucial DDR2-800
evga 7950GT KO Superclocked 512MB video card
150GB RaptorX
Dell 2407 LCD
Vista Ultimate 64

I'm not a hard core gamer so I have no ideas about what in game settings are best to tweak.

Any help is appreciated.

Circuit City has it for $39.99.

I bought it from GameStop last night just because I didn't want to drive to buy it. It's a really fun game, but I don't like that when you have a cue to do something, like blow up a tank or call in air support in single player mode, if you don't do what the game wants you to, the opposition is totally unbeatable and the guys just keep coming.

In reality, you could be fighting the enemy and eventually, things would get quiet and the battle would go somewhere else. There's not enough of that. This is my first COD game, so I'm not sure how much I like it yet. The AC130 mission and the sniper missions were pretty awesome. I plan on taking my PC to my parents' house with me over Christmas just so I can show this to my dad and let him shoot the guys on the ground.

i'm about ready to throw the game out the f-ing window!

between the f-ing time out issue and dying without even taking an f-ing shot 90% of the time, its pissing me off.

I don't get it. I'm looking around, going from cover to cover but yet the f-ing other team sees me and kills me in 1 burst all the f-ing time. i don't even get a chance. the only way i can possibly get a kill is to camp and you can't do that because of the f-ing radar.

hmm.. I think that this game is not about camping. Get yourself a fully automatic weapon (M4) and run toward the enemy. You will do OK.

i dunno, you go out of cover and they shoot you, you camp and they shoot you. its like my character is bright orange. no matter what i do they always see me and shoot me. even when i think i got a guy and shoot first he still kills me.

Thats how the game is. You have to be aware of everything thats going on around you, aware that you cant stand still for a split second. You cant pop your head up in a really obvious spot where one would pop their head up. And as good as you'll ever be, a lot of the time its just plain bad luck, you chose the wrong direction to look in first.

Well, I think BF2 is still my MP game of choice for the moment. COD4 is pretty, and it definitely has the potential to be a lot of fun, but it just lags too much for me in busy maps with a lot of fighting going on. I also think the maps are too constrained and the rounds too short. I really like the open kind of gameplay that BF2 encourages. COD4 is definitely a spamfest and ping competition at the moment, at least as far as I can see after eight or ten games.

Hey pontifex - I think I bought some stuff from you loooong time ago

Don't feel pissed off. I felt the same way. After playing CS:S for years, this game is a challenge for me to get used to as well. The whole awareness thing is out of the window. I get knifed all the time. I wish I could increase the field of vision (FOV) more to see more. I have no problems killing people _who_ I see, but I can't hear/feel them behind me. In CS:S it was hard to sneak behine and knife me. Here it is a different story.

The radar gives away a lot about enemies on the map unless they have radar jammer perk or use a silinced weapon. A camper doesn't last long, since once he gets a kill, next time the guy respawns, he nailes/nades the bastard )). Also once you shoot, I can see a tracer from far away giving away your location.

I like playing on the objective oriented maps. There is more team play and you don't end up having a bunch of guys behind you knifing the living hell out of you.

I started getting headaches playing this game. Anybody else? I need to try to go through the tweak guide and play around with video options.

I think I'd be more satisfied with a CTF game type. I just can't really seem to get into the groove with these other types. i'd still probably suck but i'd be a bit more comfortable.

i should have SoF tomorrow so maybe that will be more my play style (and it has CTF!) but it may play a lot like CoD4 (i hope its different though).

I'm on the edge as far as buying this... I still need to play through Episode 2 again, I have GoW now and will have Crysis soon...

Can someone elaborate on this whole Sniper sequence at the end (Spoilers are okay)? It sounds like EXACTLY the kind of gameplay I've been looking for, and that alone would be worth the price of admission for me.

The sniper mission in Pripyat in COD4 was one of the best parts of the game. Avoiding soldiers and BTRs (personnel carrier vehicles) combing through the field was a cool suspenful experience. I wish they provided Russian-English subtitles during this mission. I speak Russian so I could understand soldiers talking about you while I was hiding under the trucks. Those conversations made sense. It is nice to have a game where they followed all the rules, including small details like soldiers' dialogs. Some voice-overs were done by native Russian speaking guys, most of them, however, with a thick English accent by the American team actors.

Like a cherry on the pie, the moment when you have to take out a bad guy with a 50-cal sniper rifle from a distance of about 1 km was the best part.

Forgot to mention a little frustrating part at the end: a bunch of soldiers with dogs will attack you and your buddy. I played on hardened and died about 20-25 times before I finished the level. I had to take a few breaks to calm myself down. You will have to find a good camping spot to avoid being bitten in the ass by dogs or killed by enemies. I will let you figure that one out by yourself (I suffered, so should you) ))

yeah, i died like 20+ times there and still haven't finished yet. I haven't played the SP in a few days though.

Posted this earlier, but since you guys brought up that battle at the end, here's how I got through it after a good 20 tries. At first I was trying to snipe the guys coming down from the choppers, and in some cases I got all four, but I realized it didn't matter. While they are dramatically roping down others are flooding in from the rear. There's really no way the two of you are going to engage these enemies successfully (didn't stop me from trying, a lot).

The only real point is to stay alive long enough, and with enough health, to survive the onslaught during a run to the chopper once it arrives. I retreated back behind the ferris wheel, which stopped all or most fire from the front, then focused on killing the few guys who tried to flank me. Once the ride showed up I just grabbed MacMillan and ran for it.

This is one game where you do get a sense of accomplishment when you live through a tough spot.

Have you tried the UAV jammer along with a silenced weapon, seems to work well for me, this combo should keep you off the radar.

That's how I survived through that mission. Trial and error method until I retreated to the same spot markbnj mentioned. I just didn't want to completely spoil his game

And yes, you do feel a sense of accomplishment (big time) at the end of it. This is the game I felt good spending $50 for.
