I've been pulled over twice, both times by troopers driving in the opposite direction.

While we're on this subject, I was wondering how sensitive, and durable radar guns are. The reason I ask is, last week I watched 4 cops chatting, and playing around with one, and they dropped it twice onto the sidewalk.

In PA, only state cops can have radar - local cops can't.

When I did a ridealong, I got the 'lowdown'.

Radar can be used in either direction while moving. However, radar is very imprecise. They can't pick your speed out from a group of cars. So if you're traveling with a pack, radar is useless.

Laser can only be used while stopped. So a cop must be stopped when using it. They can use a laser to pick you out of a group of cars.

They've had those for more than 20 years. They're big down in Texas as many of the interstates don't have rails, just grass medians that separate the two directions of traffic. The cops cruise in one direction and shoot every car going the other way. If they nail somebody they u-turn through the median to pull the car over.

It was ridiculous. I was just cursing along, I see a cop go by and don't think twice about it.

Nest thing I know, I see his light flip on and he start a 3-point turn in the middle of the road behind me. I pulled right over, haha.

I asked him about how he caught me, and he told me that his radar works in all directions - we talked about it for like ten minutes and he let me off with a verbal warning. Pretty neat.

Yeppers...FLIR and RLIR are common on all CHP cars as well as most of the local cop cars nowadays, PLUS, many CHP also have "LIDAR" laser guns.

yup CHP does have LIDAR. They have been using it more and more of late it seems. I got tagged twice by laser in the last few months.. thank you Escort 8500.

First time I was going the limit, so no problems, but i was going in a downhill section of I-5 into castiac (south I-5 before castiac starts)

The other time was last weekend, coming over a hill into santa cruz area (HWY 17) and the guy nails me, i was the pack leader, i braked hard... no ticket though.

I was going 60 in a 45 at that point, brought it down to 50 in a micro second. I dont know if he hit me first or someone else, regardless I got a warning from the detector and I slowed. Guy was camping behind a tree.

At least Kahleeforneeya "plays fair" with its radar use.

The law requires the cop to be in plain sight, no hidden radar traps not visible from the roadway, no "undercover radar cars" like they use in many states, etc.

the last time we lived in Spokane, (86-87) the WSP was using a 1959 Dodge pick up as a radar car...and bragged about how many speeders they caught with it. When I used to travel a lot for my work, I'd see cops on the side of the highway, no car in sight...posing as a bicyclist, with a broken-down VW mini-bus, hiding in the bushes, etc...just to catch someone speeding.

While I don't like the radar cars, at least we have something of a "level playing field" here.

Yep this is true. First, speed limits not set to the actual safe and reasonable speed for the road.

Now we have red light cameras and..... drumroll..... coming to the bottom of a hill in a 25mph zone near you!!!... speed cameras!!!!

Not everywhere. In NH, no portion of a traffic citation fine goes to the issuing town. Then again, we also have a 'reasonable and prudent' clause in the speed statute, so if you get a ticket for 45 in a 35 and can convince the judge that 45 was reasonable and prudent for the existing conditions, you can be found not guilty of excessive speed.

"Level playing field"? What, speed limit signs aren't enough for you?

Hell, this is Kahleeforneeya...those signs are just suggestions...

Besides, as everyone knows...it ain't illegal till you get caught!

BUT, for the record, I have ~500,000 accident-free commercial miles and nearly as many on my personal vehicles over the years with a total of two tickets moving violations chargable to me. (the worse one was 65 in a 55, about 15 years ago)
As with any commerical driver, especially someone who drives large cranes, I've picked up an occasional overweight ticket in the scale houses, (cranes can be dammed tough to get axle weights just right) a couple of defective equipment citations, shit like that...all of which go against the company...not my personal driving record.

Boomer has the age, and wisdom to realize, it is indeed a game that is being played. Are you so naive to think that a '59 Dodge pick-up is used solely in the interest of safety?

We gotta great game here today folks, Boomers on the 5, it's 4th, and goal, but wait, Cops have called a time out, looks like their making a replacement here Chris, number 59 I believe. That's right Howard, Dodge Pickup, that should take away the Boomers chances of going up the middle. Now the Cops are sending two more players out on the field Chris, it's Plane, and Cam. I gotta tell ya Howard, that could effectively take away the boomers chance of the end around, side lines, or the pass, doesn't seem fair somehow. That's right Chris, despite last years horrible penalty riddled season, with numerous calls for unsportsmanlike conduct, illegal contact, roughing the passers, and this years terrible draft picks, among all the rookies, the teams owner, Hugh Gov, with all his money was still able to stack the D. The boomers have really been beaten up all game long, any chance of getting in on this drive Howard? Not likely Chris, but if they do get in on this drive, they'll be punished for it later in the game, these Cops have come to play.
