So disappointed with Asus

First let me say I am mostly venting about the two recent Asus laptops that I have purchased and am not intending to start a flame war. I was under the impression that Asus represented the best when it came to motherboards and laptops, but honestly with my recent experiences I don't believe that anymore.

Recently I have purchased two laptops, the Asus V551L and the Asus J550NV, and I am so damn disappointed with Asus. The V551L has a super grainy touch screen (720p?), came loaded with tons of crapware and has worse audio then my 10 year old dell. I honestly can't head anything from this thing, my iPhone has twice the audio quality and loudness then this laptop. For spending $1100 from Amazon, I am VERY disappointed. Also performance is not amazing, and touchpad is super annoying. The battery is on the inside of the laptop, making replacing it very hard to do, which is idiotic in my opinion.

As for the J550NV, I really haven't had a chance to use it as I purchased it for a friend. He asked me to upgrade the ram for him so I thought I would call Asus to find out what is the max speed ram that is compatible with this laptop. I have now spoked with 3 people, none of which know anything about the speed. They all told me it uses "DDR" ram. The second guy said he doesn't recommend updating anything on the laptop. Really? That is what they have for tech support? And he was the supervisor, I am on the line with them currently and its now been 35 minutes, and still no manager.

Honestly, I would rather have called Dell Tech support, something I never thought I would say before. I will never again recommend Asus again. Oh and their tech support center is located in the Caribbean.

UPDATE: after 45 minutes a manager came on the line and basically refused to answer my question claiming that Asus does not recommend or help customers upgrade their laptops as it may damage their systems. Amazing.

I am disappointed that this is how you used your 1st post.

I have bought several Asus laptops and tablets, motherboards, SFF PCs. I liked them but that was just me.

As for upgrading laptops. That is a historical general NONO.

Just use this experience as a learning lesson and move on. It's not all that bad.

Same. I've always had good experiences with Asus products. But I've never had to call their support.

Isn't RAM usually one of the components you can usually upgrade on notebooks? On Dells, its usually a single screw on the bottom to expose the SO-DIMMs. Or under the keyboard. Trend is to have them soldered in though, make the laptop slightly thinner.

Half of your complaints with the V551L could have been discovered with a little research (screen res, battery replacement, etc). How is it Asus' fault you didn't check what you were buying?

I love guys like the OP. Buys a computer without taking a good look at it or understanding the specs then complains.

I might agree with your tech support bitch a little, but your other rants make me want to automatically discount your opinion. Anyway, pop those couple of screws out to see what ram is in that machine and buy a bigger stick or fill the empty slot if there is one. I've yet to run into a laptop with soldered in ram, and adding more isn't really rocket science. You don't need "The Fastest" ram that thing will hold, just a more.

If you are still having trouble, here is the PAGE on the ASUS website where you can enter the serial or model number from your laptop and download a manual or specs for it.

I agree with you on the bloatware, but just about every laptop manufacturer loads their systems up with it. It's pretty easy to uninstall and that would have been a better use of your time than your post was.

The two ASUS laptops I own are purring along just fine. Nice bang for the buck, IMHO.

My grandson has an Asus gaming laptop that is at least 4 years old, and still running well (for the age of the hardware). He also uses it very heavily, so I am very happy with it.

So far this thread is also a 1-post-and-run drive by.

Does OP have any interest in discussing issues, or just in slamming Asus in a forum (s)he'll never visit again?

And notice that the first post was not reallyy edited to add its "update", that was part of the un-edited original:

"UPDATE: after 45 minutes a manager came on the line"

If that was really an update to an earlier post, the post would have been marked as edited. It's not. My post here is marked as edited when I added this "update" after ~3 minutes not 45.

It's not just Asus, all laptops have gone to **** once Windows 8 and touchscreens became the focus. Tablets with disposable/non-upgradable parts added to the quality degradation influence for laptops as well. Last few years have been **** across the board. It's all over, you'll never see a good laptop again. Our only hope now is Linux based laptops.

Windows 8 is definitely a buzzkil, but there's still damn good laptops out there.

Love ASUS laptops. Just sold my G750 last week and bought the Sager on my sig because i got a great deal on it and it comes with the GTX 880M and a faster cpu. Other than that the quality on that G750 was top notch.

I advise you do a bit of research before buying a laptop

Asus' support is legendary for it's uselessness, Probably about on par with Creative's. I knew more about their products and how they work than they did. They even denied the existence of fuses in their graphics cards even when I sent them pictures from reviews and from their own website which said they had been putting fuses in their cards since the GTX275.

After opening a Core 2 Duo gen laptop of theirs I was impressed with the design and build quality, even more impressed considering it's still going strong after 5 years of spillages and general abuse. Not to mention most of the time it's on someone's lap or a soft surface that blocks the vents.

Sad to hear they may worse quality these days.

OP has never come back to this thread (or even this site: Last Activity: 04-03-2014 01:39 PM ) so I'd take their Asus bashing with a shaker of salt.

I don't have any recent Asus products myself, just one of the original eeeek netbooks with 7" screen and XP. It still works when I dust it off and power it up.

To be honest in my experience ASUS really doesn't need much support, though I've heard it is slow.

About everything I've bought over the last 20 years works perfectly and is still kicking along like it should be.

Can I guess this was a G73JH variant? I have the A1 model and it does still work fine (& has always run quietly and well cooled). BUT out of the box there were a few issues - Fn and ESC locked the system and you had to power it down (BIOS update fixed it) Most people were very unhappy with the TP and the KB missed strokes for some. If was not for the help over at NBR I would have sold mine long ago.
Also a custom VBIOS was needed to update CCC for the 5870M and it could not be D/L'ed from Asus's site, I got it from a link in the aforementioned forum. (always a risky proposition)

Agreed. Mine is the 73jh-x5 variant. Took a bit if tinkering to update the vBios but I've had it 4 years and use it for work and gaming without issue. Love it, but after researching new laptops for my wife and seeing the utter garbage of Win 8, I'm going Macbook my next go around. Bought my wife a MacBook Air and it is awesome. I'm not the power user I used to be and game on a ps4 now and am a bit tired of my 10lb 17" beast.

Anyway I've enjoyed my Asus quite a bit and would definitely recommend their gaming laptop line.

My last four laptops, have been split between Asus and Acer. The two Acers, are simple to take apart, have removable batteries, and everthing is accessable.

The first Asus, a SB Pentium with Win7, I had planned to upgrade it to an SSD, until I found out that you would need to disassemble the entire laptop to get at the RAM and HDD. (No access panels.)

My second Asus, the battery is not user-replaceable, the RAM is soldered on, and I have to remove the keyboard to get at the HDD.

Basically, I think Asus laptops are built to such a low price-point, that they are essentially intended to be disposable.

Contrast that with Acer and Toshiba, even their lower-end laptops have access panels.

I have an Asus laptop and I wish I had bought a Macbook instead. Upgrading to an SSD was extremely difficult because of some useless security "features" in the BIOS. The screen dims for no reason (not because of Windows settings) Crappy build quality

I picked up the q55olf from best buy and am quite happy with it. It needed a lot to live up to to surpass my custom built 6 year old inspiron and has met and exceed my expectations. My ONLY complaint is the clickpad.

There is no in depth reviews on it so I hope to be making a youtube outlining its performance and how it stands up to common usage habits.

No, I don't remember the model number, but it was a model that came before the G73. Came with a dual core and the mobile equivalent of the 9800GT. I think it was a GX60 or something. It is very slow now of course, but he doesn't play really demanding games, so it still is good enough. He is coming home for a visit this summer, and we hope to build him a desktop.

I bought an ASUS laptop for my wife a few years ago and had to send it in for repair just after 3 months of owning it. The screen would flicker real bad or wouldn't come on. After getting it back from them it worked like a champ, but then it started happening again!

Took it upon myself to fix it and it ended up being that they didn't give the cables enough slack to move, so the cable that sent the signal to the screen would constantly unseat itself slowly over time. Easy fix, but still annoying.

I'm still trying to break it and it keeps kicking. I had Windows 7 on it, Linux Mint, and now Windows 8.1 and it's still working.

Still love their other products, but I am gun shy on buying another one of their laptops.
