@ Yours Truly - ROTFLOLLMAO. Yeah, hold out for Sandy Bridge. 2000 pounds doesn't grow on trees, you know!

I'm still using my old Dell Dimension 8100 here. My mother bought it back in March 2001 as a family computer. It's spec was 1.3ghz P4, 128mb RAM, 20gb HD, Geforce 2 MX, USB 1 - she paid just over £2000 for it. It's a shame my mouse is probably worth more than this machine now but I can surf the net AND listen to music - at the same time!

I'm holding out for something better - those 8 core Sandy Bridges look ok. But that Ivy thing looks good too..

damn that almost sounds like a joke post..

Wow, a 1.3Ghz P4, 128MB RAM and a GeForce 2 MX? My condolences for being able to put up with such a system in this day and age.

My dated rig almost seems modern in comparison (with the exception of graphics power).

That X2 4200+ is not a bad system, particularly with that SLI motherboard. The 4200s supposedly overclock pretty well. Not really tried on mine. My X2 4200+ system is currently serving in my HTPC with an ATI HD2600 Pro to handle some of the decoding chores. Blu-Ray in 1080P play perfectly.

Props to all the AthlonXP users, particularly the mobile barton cores.

My fiancée's desktop is an X2 4200+ (socket 939), A8N-SLI Premium, 1GB DDR, an X1650 Pro PCI-E. It's getting very long in the tooth, but she primarily uses a laptop so we're really not concerned.

My fiancée's son's machine is an Athlon XP 1500+ (IIRC), some generic Socket A motherboard, 512 MB DDR, and a 9800 XT. He's 6, and he also has a laptop with a P8400, 4GB DDR2, and 9650m GT to use, so upgrading it isn't any huge priority.

No doubt. It's probably some cheap, slow HDD slowing it down. An x2 4200+ is about equal to a Pentium D at 3.6ghz, which isn't slow for every day tasks. In fact, it's still pretty good. The x1650 pro is decent enough too...

I'm just upset someone broke my sata support in linux 2.6.35 and 36. Looks like forever stuck in 2.6.34.1

For those wondering were exactly to find the HW acceleration option in WinXP you go to your Video Properties -> Advanced -> Troubleshoot. You will see this:

Back when I had a system that I had a PCI ATI Rage Pro, oh it was old heh, it would choke hard if that slider was turned all the way up. But bumping it just down one notch made video, even decently high HD stuff depending on the format, doable.

So before you turn it all the way off bump it down notch by notch to see where it will work for you.

It's obviously NOT my primary rig, but in the closet I have a Pentium 133 with 16MB of RAM that still works...ish. I pull it out now and then and reminisce with Win95.

I don't get how some people still use a desktop computer that isn't up to par with a P4 2.6ghz or better. Web pages load slow in almost every browser. Basic OS tasks become a chore. When I used an old P4 1.8ghz with Fedora 13 it was still painfully slow. After upgrading it to a P4 3.2ghzHT the difference was night and day.

Do you people use browsers with no images?

Lack of money to buy a new one? Some people for various reasons simply don't have the money to get a new computer.

On my rig (specs of which I listed earlier in this thread), I can browse websites fine, and watch movies up to 720p quality fine on my computer. I get a bit of stuttering on 720p Youtube clips, but that's about it.

Obviously I can't play modern video games due to lack of a discrete graphics card, but I can do most other tasks fine.

Basic OS tasks are quite fast on my computer.

It's silly to think you need a P4 at 2.6Ghz or better to do simple OS tasks or internet browsing. I used to have an older rig with a 1Ghz P3 with only 256MB RAM that did fine internet browsing in Windows XP. It's not just about specs, but also about optimizations you have to your system.

With the exception of 1080p movies and Youtube, webpages on my computer load faster than my friend's Q6600 Core 2 Duo quad-core. His specs blow away my computer, yet webpages for him load slower and basic OS tasks are no faster on his computer.

I run web browsers customized for speed, and I have customized XP itself to run very lean and fast.

IDK, I have a Netbook that is based on the same architectures. It's a Celeron M 900mhz, 2GB DDR2 and an Intel 915, running 480P video is a pain in the butt at the low 1024x600 resolution. If that was my primary computing power I'd have to shoot myself. It's just too slow.

My Fiance is using that netbook on a trip right now and it's just barely fast enough for Facebook to be comfortable. Don't even mention Youtube...

Indeed 2GB of PC5300 and windows XP.

Now that I'm not using it as a retro game machine (ty VM's) I'm all for using a linux OS. As long as it's as lightweight and very light on the HDD, I want it.

Any reccs?

My main rig is in my sig. My work computer at my previous job, though? P4 1.6Ghz, 512 RAM. I HATED going to work.

Of course, now even the Core 2 Duos with 2GB RAM at my college don't feel up to snuff. I've grown spoiled

Strange, it must be down to system optimization, or lack of it seems.

Are you asking for requirements or recommendations? I'm not that much of a Linux expert, I'm sure some other users here on the forums however are.

I run Slackware current (13.1 with latest packages). I can get by with a root partition of 10gb, and a /home of however big you think you'll need. You might be able to go as low as 7-8gb if you don't compile your own kernel. If you don't want X windows, you could probably go as low as a couple gb

CentOS 5 on firewall: 1.2 GB of files on root (and no other partitions required).
CentOS 5 on fileserver: 2.2 GB of files on root.
CentOS 5 on my (spartan X11) desktop: 3.4 GB root.
Fedora 13 (bells and whistless) desktop: 7.0 GB on root.

So 10 GB is quite enough for root partition.

What? You're telling me something I've witnessed and experienced personally was wrong? No, the fact is, my computer DOES load webpages faster than my friend's Q6600 Core 2 Quad. The main reasons are that I have a faster internet connection for one, and also that my computer is heavily optimized and running a custom Chrome browser setup. His computer is not optimized at all, has tons of junk on it, etc.

Also, A Q6600 is not "a new computer". That processor is already a few years old.

I never even compared my computer to a new one so I don't know why you tried to.
