So does the Dell 2007WFP have HDCP or not?

Has anyone been able to confirm whether or not the 2007WFP has HDCP?

I assumed HDCP was in so I went ahead and picked one up.

Do me a favor, remember this post and let me know if there are any banding issues, will you? I need to make a decision in the next week or so..

I think it is game over on banding. I have been reading two forums Everyone who checks has banding on DVI with both the 2007fp and 2007fpw.

Big screwup on Dells part. I was ready to order one, but not anymore.

That really, really sucks. I'm now forced to go with the larger 2405 or another monitor entirely.

*oops, sorry for the thread high-jack. I'd also like to know if it supports HDCP

I'm of the opinion that the only way to know if it supports HDCP is when the devices, content, and OS are available to test it on.

Also, what's banding?

I just ordered one tonight but apparently it's being constructed or something. They originally sent me a FP by accident and it was shipped the same day, now it's not shipping until May 1st. Perhaps there's going to be some sort of new panel being used that doesn't have the banding flaw? I'll let you guys know once I get it, but it'll be a couple weeks

Don't worry about, don't look for it, and it won't bother you.

seriously, i have both a 2005 and 2007 sitting here, the 2007 does have banding. I would have never noticed it unless i tested for it. undetectable during normal usage IMO, and i was looking at picture quality.

Who knows whether HDCP is supported... like someone said upthread I doubt we'll know until we have all the hardware, the OS, and media to play that requires it. And even then... remember how all ATI and Nvidia GPUs were claimed as "HDCP compliant" or whatever but it turned out none of them have the HDCP unique identifier chip required for a device to output?

I ordered one last night... was going to get a 2005FPW due to the banding reports but those disappeared from stock between leaving work and getting home =^(

Yeah, I have a feeling the only HDCP compliant hardware is going to be inside complete systems which have been "blessed" by the MPAA.

By "blessed" I mean HDCP implemented on the EFI (or BIOS), hard drives, optical drives, video pathway (meaning north and south bridges for motherboard chipset), and all outputs. Also, such a system would not contain any inputs for actually recording anything.

I disagree. This is highly subjective. One guy in the thread first noticed banding issues while playing a game, not in testing.

You do testing so you don't have to deal with it later and wonder if the game has poor visuals, or if your own HW was at fault. This is the same reason, I burn-in test my systems, so I know I have stability. I would prefer to start with good HW.

Here is a banding test:
http://www.ykwong.com/checkemon.html

Select the color gradient test. The bottom line should be a smooth tone going across your screen. This indicates you have the capability of displaying all shades properly. If there are jumps causing breaks were it is not smooth, this is called banding. It means colors are missing. Right mouse button changes colors.

As far as HDCP. Who cares on a monitor this small. The chances of getting a totally complient PC end to end is pretty low to start with. Are you really going to pay to play Hi res download movies on your tiny PC screen??

When I ordered mine, their website showed the same kinda thing...an estimated ship date that was two weeks out.

However, two days later it shipped, and their site was updated. I think it's just something goofy with their order tracking software.

Uh, I watch movies on my 15" LCD and it's enjoyable, I think it's safe to assume I will enjoy viewing them on a 20" Widescreen as well...

Alright, I'll check occasionally to see what's up with it.

I think you misinterpret. I watch movies on my computer CRT as well.

But what has that got to do with HDCP? HDCP is only of some benefit if:

1: You have windows Vista.
2: You have a HDCP compliant card, with HDCP chip intact (which is about zero right now).
3: You pay some exhobitant fee to download a hidef movie that requires HDCP (also about zero available).

I have not plans to buy anything in this chain, let alone all of it. Poeple just jump on the feature checklist bandwagon.

But suppose you get a monitor with HDCP, then in the future you get a fully HDCP compliant computer, complete with vista and HCDP chipped.

Now you can watch HD content. So how much do you think HD downloads are going to cost $30 (HD-DVD price).

Now that you jumped through all these hoops, paid all the extra money for the complete HDCP chain to play HD content, then shelled out a premium to buy HD content, Do you really think you will even see any difference between HD and regular DVD on a tiny 20" screen??

Here is one of the first reviews of HD-DVD:
http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/lastsamurai.html
But will it be enough to blow people away after all the hype? Purely on video quality, I hate to say probably not. Unless you are only used to standard DVD on a 32-inch or less TV, and see HD-DVD on a big screen, you may wonder what all the fuss is about. But if you have a dedicated home theater that can take full advantage of HD-DVD's capabilities, you certainly will be getting the best pre-recorded consumer video money can buy.

Bottom line: You need a BFS (Big Friggin Screen) in order to really see a difference with HD content. It is really not worth time/money to try and assemble an HDCP compliant system around a 20" screen.

I don't know where you're getting any of this from (and no one's denying that HDCP is going to be a pain in the ass), but as far as the above comment that I quoted - a 20" screen is far from "tiny", and I watch HDTV on my 2005FPW all the time. There is a HUGE difference over DVD content. You do know that the monitor has many more pixels than standard DVD resolution, right?

So we have you claiming it is HUGE difference on a tiny 20" screen. And we have the guy reviewing HD-DVD saying it is not that big a deal on big screen. Hmmm.

I owned a Dell 24" 2405 for a while and at a reasonable distance for movies of about 5-6feet, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference between regular DVD and HD. You could only tell the difference with a small 20" (and I consider it small since it only the same vertical height as a 17" lcd) if you sit right in front of it. I won't pay for HD content to view it that way.

But to each his own. I wouldn't buy this monitor because of the obvious banding. HDCP is something I will look for in an 40"+ home theater screen. Dont care if my tiny monitor screen does it.

dvd's are 720x480. hd dvd's are 1920x1080. anyone who thinks you cant see a difference needs to check their eyes (or their setup). saying it doesnt matter on a 20" screen is like saying it doesnt matter if you run a 2007fp at 800x600.

A small screen limits viewing distance. If you sit 5 or 6 feet away you are not going to see the full detail of HD. I won't pay for HD content if I have to sit within 3feet of a screen to view it. Thus HDCP is of no interestest to me on a small screen. Are you really going to pay $30 for a movie to watch it sitting right in front of your computer?

Try your 800x600 test with a HD video content and a CRT (avoid LCD scaling issues) sit 5 or 6 feet away. You probably can't tell the differnce.

I never tested for banding on the 2007WFP and noticed it right away during an Eve Online session. The further testing i did merely re-enforced the fact that something was not right in the gradient department.

Anyone able to get to the service menu on the 2007WFP?

So, how long do you think before this whole HDCP thing is cracked?

There's no doubt that it'll be harder than the DVD's we have out today, but will it be possible? (Cause I really don't want to upgrade my current top of the line PC just to view HD content)
