Leaving a situation to get a gun then returning means it is no longer a self-defense situation. There have been cases where persistent abuse has been used as justification for shooting another when there is no immediate threat. Think of a consistently abused spouse or child who shoots the abuser when they are not actively being abused. Past abuses and fear of future abuses can make the shooting justified in the eyes of the law.
Differences in that situation and this one and why it's an unfit comparison to make: Both of those kids know each other and there is a familiarity there - not strangers attacking strangers.
