I did something similar to what you are asking about. I have 8.1 on my desktop at home and I tested 10 on my laptop. I used my Live ID for both computers.

Apps did not transfer over from one pc to another and I don't use IE. Email obviously did and one thing that I really liked was my documents and pictures were synced between pc's via Onedrive.

As an example one night I was at work trying to put a pre-book in for this season. It was getting late and I didn't feel like sticking around so I saved it on my laptop. After the kids went to bed I loaded the file on my pc at home and was ready to go.

It was all very seamless and easy to use. I know a lot of people here are against it but I thought it was very handy and I honestly don't mind logging in with a Live ID. It does have its advantages and those would only grow if you used a MS phone and MS tablet like the Surface, but I realize it's not for everybody.
Strange. For me, it actually *did* bring over all my apps and the exact home Start screen layout I already had. Specifically, the app tiles for apps I had downloaded from the store each had a little download arrow symbol on each tile. Trying to launch one would trigger it to actually download. A small app would launch in seconds, as if it was already installed locally. After the first launch, it actually is installed locally.

im not running 10, but for those that are how is it working with dual monitors? Win 8.xs metro interface sucks on dual mons, im somewhat amazed they have not fixed it yet. is this better in 10 or no?

I currently run start8 on 8.1 because metro is just too annoying to deal with with 2 monitors,

The touch screen interface? Not even sure if you can bring it up anymore on computers.

- Does it come with Occulus Rift support? Is it a 3D operating system?
- Does it come with JARVIS?
- Does it come with a friggin expressomaker?

What in hell do I need from my OS? Click once, click twice, execute desired app. Thats friggin it. Since XP we have gotten nothing but nothing for our monies.. It might as well be a subscription system instead you just gotta go through the hazzle of reinstalling everything every other year.
Unfortunately I like to play a game once in a while.. otherwise i'd be done with this crap a long time ago.

How am I liking windows10 so far? It is crap .. and I havent even used it.

Well call me .. something .. that HoloLens

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolo...oLens-augmented-reality-headset-launched.html

... sure looks nifty. Lets call *that* a good reason.. cant wait to give it a try .. I am on the windows10 wagon cause of this.

paying for add-ons we might want could be a solution. A solid basic OS for everyone, and the rest, like service packs (instead of releasing a new OS), faster this or that, dual desktop, whatever, we pay for them.

could this work?

Maybe?

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no cost. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet.

And just like any Internet service, the idea of asking “What version are you on?” will cease to make sense – which is great news for our Windows developers.

That to me basically rules Windows 11 out of existing and says all new features are free....but who knows.

I'm having some issues getting vmware player build to update. Windows update works fine, but the preview build updater just reboots without updating the build.

I don't have anything on it, so it'll probably be easier to just download the iso and set up a new VM. Still a bit annoying, though.

On the other thread someone said that you need at least 8GB of free space for the new build update (and I can verify this as it happened to me). I trimmed some space by deleting:
C : \RecoveryImage\Install.esd - 2.7GB
C : \Windows\Panther\Rollback\Files\WindowsOld.wim - 3.2GB
Also cleaned up the first download I tried using the disk cleanup. Upgrading worked after this.

Free HDD space isn't the issue. It initially gave me an error about requiring a minimum 2 GB of RAM. I have fixed that issue but it still won't install the updated build.

Like I said, at this point it will probably be faster to just redownload the latest *.iso and go clean. All I have installed is Firefox and Foxit.

On one of my VMs I nuked the old one and installed the new build from scratch. On my other VM I did an upgrade. They both took about the same amount of time, but at least the upgrade keeps installed applications, settings, etc. As others have mentioned, make sure you have enough space available on the virtual drive.

What was the error code?

No code, it just reboots to the regular login screen and has no indication that it's doing anything.

I've already deleted the prior VM, and will be installing it again very shortly.

If I were take a guess, something in that initial 2 GB RAM warning tripped a flag that never got put back after I addressed the issue.

I was only giving it 1.5 GB of RAM, and to its benefit, it was running great. The PC I'm messing around with it on only has 4 GB. I'll give it 2 GB off the bat and hopefully it goes well from there.

EDIT: It's also possible I messed something up trying to install the vmware tools, I jumped the gun and did a couple steps out of order.

I don't like it either, but as someone said above, people do it with their phones and tablets all the time, and since Windows 10 (8) is supposed to be an OS that spans all three type of devices, it both does make sense for Microsoft to do it this way, and doesn't make sense for people to make too much of a big deal about it.

Yeah but practically no one owns any Microsoft devices except PCs.

Its annoying. My desktop doesn't need silly little apps for the weather or sports feeds, its a proper computer with a big ass screen. As much as Microsoft keep pushing the store its still not going to work, its just not a way that people use PCs and, unfortunately for Microsoft, that's the only device running windows anyone uses.

Also...

By "fixing the 2GB RAM issue", do you mean that you got it to work on 1GB RAM? If not, that doesn't sound good for 1GB Windows 8.1 tablets that will be upgraded to Windows 10. Does anyone know if the free Bing version get the free upgrade as well?

Hard to refute a per country argument with a worldwide chart, especially when said countries are admittedly not driving forces in the worldwide market. Windows Phone isn't a market contender in the US or China, so naturally their worldwide numbers will look poor.

And this is without even going into the line you drop, "stagnant light blue line at the bottom there is looking real healthy." Do you know what their costs are? Do you know what their margins are? Do you have some kind of insider information that says how well the Windows Phone division is doing? Do you even know what stagnant means?

I'm not trying to say that they're profitable, but I also doubt that they're losing money hand over fist. You don't need 80% of the market to be successful, and even a lack of growth is not an indication of failure. Lack of growth does not mean that their base is shrinking. In fact, it's not even stagnant. They've been growing steadily (and slowly) since 2011.

Or would you also use that chart to say that iOS is failing at a paltry 11%?

By "fixing the 2GB RAM issue", do you mean that you got it to work on 1GB RAM? If not, that doesn't sound good for 1GB Windows 8.1 tablets that will be upgraded to Windows 10. Does anyone know if the free Bing version get the free upgrade as well?

I "fixed" it by upping the amount of RAM available to the VM so that it was 2 GB. I can't speak to those tablets. I got a new VM up and running, but I don't even get to try talking at Cortana, as my laptop doesn't have a mic. I don't think I'll care enough to get one hooked in. I'll at least be giving the search a go. They've eliminated a step by putting it right in the task bar. Ideally, that should be a good thing. I just wish (personal opinion incoming) that it was on the right side and optional like the other toolbars.

Lol its the Zune all over again.

iOS has its high end/apple product niche, android caters for everyone else, who wants a windows based device? Yeah... They are years late to the game with no compelling unique selling point and despite this a noncompetitive price. Zune 2.0

MS clearly don't want to be a bit player in the mobile game, yet its likely how they will remain. They dont give a toss about mobile profits (yet), they want a strong foothold, their corporate profits take care of losses from other divisions.

Yeah, they are changing their OS so it can be compatible with phones, tablets and the pc and also so programmers will make programs for their apps store. But here is the thing, I will never buy a Windows based tablet, phone or anything of the sort other than a pc. So they are expending all those efforts uselessly in my eyes and mostly the world's too I would venture to guess. Too late to the party...
