I put it on an old Optiplex 745 that is sort of souped up. So far, I am totally unimpressed but then I'm not the one that needs to be impressed. There is simply nothing there for me that doesn't already exist in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. I'll probably run it on that machine for a few more days before I get tired of playing with it and dump it.

I have to agree with you.

I'm running win 8.1 with startisback and I'm noticing minimal difference to win10 in a VM. Mind you thats probably the point.

Didn't they add most of the normal start menu functionality to the left side though?

Not sure what you mean?

Basically you can either enjoy a modern-less UI and boot straight to the desktop.

Or you can still view the old start menu that's optimized for touch. The new desktop start menu isn't optimized for touch and has smaller UI elements hard to tap on without a stylus.

It's like what they asked for Win8/Win8.1. To have a double personality, meaning to be able to change between the tablet and computer interfaces.

I was curious how they would appease the Win7 lovers. I've heard so many hating the Win8 release, and many wouldn't buy Win8 for the lack of a desktop start.. I would call Win10 more like "Win 8+" or "Win 7 Hybrid"... Not much new. Obviously, Microsoft listened to the Win8 complaints and downplayed the Win8 features to compliment the desktop... I initially like it... Beta bugs include alot of adobe freezes, and from previous replies, IE 11 still needs some work... I run win10 on non-touchscreen desktop computer, so I'm interested to see replies for touchscreen, tablets, etc... As I posted on my Twitter, your parents or grandparents won't be frightened by Win10 as they were when Win8 and the advent of live tiles dominating the main screen...

So far I don't mind it. It reminds me a lot of 8.1 expect the start screen is now shoe horned onto the start button. I just started playing with it though so I might have more to add as I get farther into it.
Here's a nice screen shot to make you guys get in gear and try it out.

Is it possible that the "Free Windows 9" is going to mean "Free Windows 10"?

Is it possible that MS might even make that offer to Win7 users, in order to get them to use the "App Store"? To try to get them into the MS ecosystem?

Also, for those that have installed Win10, is an MS account required, or will it let you use / create a "local" account?

That in itself doesn't look that new, been using 8.1 a long time I guess to begin with.

Looks a bit of much ado about nothing unless other things under the hood going on.

I did. A chose a local account at first but after the install was finished I decided I wanted to check out the store so I used my hotmail account to login.

Of course it doesn't look new because its not. Comparing 8.1 to Win10 is like comparing Vista to 7. Are they kinda different...sure but not really.
I don't think there are any under the hood changes. 10 uses the same basic kernel as 8.

I'm a Win 8.1 fan, and so far using Win 10 Tech Preview for a couple of days now, the only major difference I can see is the Start Menu improvements. Otherwise pretty much same/same for me.

Yeah, has anyone noticed any under the hood improvements, or any show stopping bugs? Doesnt seem like theyre changing anything that radical.

I thought they changed the start screen to be like that continuum feature they showed, but I guess not.

I'm trying to find a purpose for these tiles, but the way they rearrange themselves drives me absolutely crazy. On the desktop I can put an icon anywhere I want. God forbid I change one tile, and my entire screen rearranges itself. It's like when your wife cleans up for you and hides all your stuff, and then you can't find anything. Makes for nice screenshots I guess.

Virtual desktops is a torso at best. No drag and drop to arrange apps to different desktops? What is this crap?

I think I was able to do this, but I don't remember exactly how. I have it in a VM, and only tested it for a bit Wednesday before opening 2 apps caused it to completely hang. ^_^

I've been using 8.1 for so long now though that not having metro is throwing me off, especially since I wasn't able to figure out an easy way to get into it. I never minded metro, I just never liked the hidden corners.

I think Win8.1 with a Start menu ie something like Start8 is closest you will get to Win10 clone without Metro.

Funny for all those users including myself that got use to no Start menu will have to get use to using either the new Win10 Start menu or Start screen.

I'll probably stick to the Start menu for desktop use on Win10.

After playing with it a bit in VirtualBox, I think the comparisons to Vista and 7 are apt. This isn't a dramatically revolutionary OS (at least in its current state), but it does iron out two of my three biggest Windows 8 complaints. Having modern apps in windows is fantastic. Similarly, having a start menu that uses the live tiles while still remaining a genuinely desktop experience is great. I haven't been able to test it yet, and it's a much more difficult problem technically, but if they can fix their high DPI support, I'd be elated. In particular, I want to be able to switch between my high DPI laptop monitor and my 1920x1200 desktop monitor as the primary display without logging out.

I just said screw it and installed it on my main rig. As far as I can tell it's no more than a win8 update that changes nothing under the hood. I've got backups.

I use my 4k monitor a lot now and not just for gaming. Windows apps and UI all scale well now.

To be fair you have to remember it's like a beta stripped down version(ie light version) of Win10 final which will obviously have more features/tweaking, not to mention bug fixing,so don't expect too much from a preview build,it's far from Win10 final.

Regardless it'll be interesting to see what final version of Win10 turns out to be like.

What options do you have in the colour (text/background) of the start menu, I prefer black text on white background.

Edit : looking at your screen, is the menu colour automatically chosen based on the main colour of your wallpaper, ie. black

You can have it match the photo, or change the color same as in Win7 and up.

Installed win 10 on my old Dell inspiron 6400
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor T7200
4gb ram
500 gb - 7200 RPM HHD.

I was so surprized install took less than 20 mins, and my laptop boots up from a cold start in 11 seconds. I am very very surprised.( my daily driver T430s with a Samsung 840 pro boots win7 pro in 21 seconds)
So far i like Win 10
- start menu is clean.
-love the multiple desktops.
- Uses a lot less resources than windows 7 and 8. ( a lot less than windows 7 )
- has been stable ( did lose my wifi connection once but after a restart and un-checking power save management works like a charm )
- I did experience some choppiness on while viewing 1080p content but i think i am going to blame that on my slower processor.
-Overall. I think it is a very polished OS.
