Because we want to type every command and pretend we are back in DOS.

If you all want a laugh, type Windows Update in the search bar and look at what section it is listed under it (hint: it's a place it is no longer available).

Right click desktop, new shortcut. Location of item = "C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /c wuapp". Name it whatever you want to. Done.

I was suggesting this, but I guess people don't realize you can create a shortcut to cmd.exe AND run a command all in one. /c closes the command prompt after running the command (and wuapp command is asynchronous.) /k leaves it open.

Thanks, i'm going to test this out...didn't realize that you could do that - could be a good workaround.

The newest build seems good although I'm not really a fan of the new icons so much. Oh well, not a huge deal though since i'll either get used to them or change them.

As of build 10041 it is actually becoming bearable, aside from the icons. The installed size has gotten a lot smaller, and the OS itself has sped up greatly, even on older hardware. Now hopefully they will figure out something with transparency and some better icons, or someone to create a nice theme for it.

10041 is the most bug-filled build yet on my computer. Lot's of problems, too many to list or even remember at this point.

Welcome to the club!

I said the same thing about Win 8.x... except I said "I doubt I'll install it ever".

DX12 will likely drive me to install it. Who knows, maybe things will get better...but clearly getting rid of their test teams is *not* helping them.

I'll install it when they stop shoving UI changes down people's throats and ditch the MS paint style icons. It's 2015 not 1995.

Has anyone been able to build a AIO for build 10041?

I built one but it only lists Pro x86 & Pro x64. I had migrated Enterprise x86 & x64 into the .wim but the installer doesn't list them.

It could be that I had a typo somewhere, but I doubt it.

I'm experiencing hard lock-ups with build 10041. Still trying to figure out what the cause is.

Same here. Mainly they completely broke running metro apps windowed. Worked fine in the previous build but this one has parts of the app being cut off past the window borders.

Seems like people were complaining that they were taking too long to release a new build so they rushed this one out the door. But this is what I was expecting when putting myself in the fast ring so I'm ok with it as long as the bugs get fixed in the next build.

Microsoft was behind apple/android in tablet world for years and all tablets sold with apple/android meant less $$$ for Microsoft. Windows 7 was too bloated and inconvenient for most tablets at the time so Windows RT was their $$$ answer.

I'll tell you what IS (because I still use it) wrong with Windows 7:
- not enough customization
- not enough customization
- not enough customization

Not to mention the relative lack of customization.

So Microsoft released Windows 8, which is WAY less customizable, for starters, and ugly as sheet besides.

Microsoft logic. You can't beat it. I certainly wish I could though.

Update - did an absolutely clean install. Immediately ran SFC /scannow... failed at 18%.

Ran the steps per the guidance Jackalito linked... success.

SFC /scannow fixed damaged system files.

And I too believe the system is now a bit more responsive. Will attempt to do some of things I could not do before and see if they now work. THANKS!

Update to my update- this time I was able to uninstall more than ONE app but still have a number of useless apps that needed removing. Haven't checked much beyond that.

Oh, so far as Windows 7... not much at all in my opinion. I would agree with Morbus so far as a need for a bit more customization in 7 - but 8/8.1/ and 10 need a LOT more customization. I think MS most certainly should have started with 7 as a base for improvements and should have concentrated on a DESKTOP operating system instead of a do-all confused mess.

Glad that it worked for you as well

It's odd, but for some reason Windows Update won't offer me 10014 despite my having selected the Fast setting for preview build installations.

I guess you meant, build 10041. But don't worry, taking into account the headaches it's causing some of us, you're better off far from it for the time being

Yes, that's what I meant. Oops! Your point is well-made but I'd like to see the new build, bugs and all, regardless of reported problems. And it looks like I found the problem: my registry settings were messed up. Some manual editing of the registry fixed the problem. Hooray.
