Why don't you test those applications in the Tech preview before making the jump?

No I mean I've been using the tech preview for the last 6 or so months and everything is fine. I was just wondering if it is worth going to the "actual" release version since I'd have to redo everything.

Only you can answer that question

Which version of the tech preview are you on? If it's 10240, that's the release version anyways. Otherwise if the version difference isn't much, why not go the upgrade route rather than the clean install? At that point it's not like you're jumping OS versions like 7 to 10, it's more like a minor in-version update. Plus you can do the refresh afterwards if you think there are any "leftovers" from the upgrade.

I don't think they'll let me upgrade from Windows 10 Enterprise Tech Preview to Windows 10 Pro.

I will say you should probably wait a few weeks at least before upgrading. Lots of little bugs.

Surface 3 users make sure you update to the latest firmware (released yesterday), the mic doesn't work with the previous one. Not sure I saw the firmware download on 8 before I upgraded, so check for updates after the install.

Here are my problems:
-Cars: Fast as Lightning crashes and Frozen Freefall seems messed up, my son will be sad.

-phone companion app crashes on launch

-No swipe gestures in edge or IE

-There seems to be a bit of lag opening the start screen in tablet mode. Also I have had several occasions where the start screen doesn't appear after closing an app, have to press win key to get it to come back up.

Thinking about going back to 8.1 until some of the issues get fixed.

Win 10 doesn't play nice with Nvidia drivers right now, manually downloaded and attempted to install 353.62 but it said it couldn't find a compatible card so I installed GFE and it installed 353.62 fine but now games play like absolute crap and Planetside 2 won't even launch.

Ars has found out that only 500 programs can be stored and displayed in start menu. How do you get rest ran? Don't try search, it also remembers same 500 entries only.

Where did you download from? I could only find 353.30 from nvidia, and it was awful. WU had 353.62 and it plays fine for me.

Also, I basically uninstalled ALL nvidia drivers after the upgrade, rebooted and then re-installed. Else, it wouldn't find compatible hardware.

This sounds familiar. Two things:

First, reboot. If that doesn't fix it (seems the driver that nvidia pushed requires a reboot)
Go into add/remove programs, remove everything nvidia (that will force you to do 2 reboots) and then install 353.62.

I have run the tech preview from the start of the program, and did a clean install on a new ssd this morning on the same machine as I ran the preview on.

the first time I went to play a MP3 from my NAS, Groove Music opened and played the file, however it told me it could not find any music on my PC gave the option to tell it where to look so I pointed it at the NAS.

still didn't find any music on the PC. It will play any song if I go to the NAS drive and pick it from the music folder on the NAS.

I don't recall that the final version I upgraded to on the preview had this problem. Odd indeed

Well it finally found the music on the NAS, took quite awhile and a restart. 120 ish gigs of music sooooo maybe that's why .

Downloaded version doesn't work, but the GFE tool and driver through Windows update does. And barely even has acceptable performance.

Just upgraded on my laptop to try it, I never bothered with the preview builds. Its better than 8 and 8.1 which were steaming piles.

Its worse than 7.

That new start menu is uh... questionable :hmm: It does the same as the windows 7 one whilst taking up more space. Have to scroll for ages now to find a program. Also it looks like one big advert. Sooner I get classic start on this thing the better.

Also the new "settings" app... I go to change the touchpad settings and it opens up a window from the old control panel lol. What was the point in that? To be fair the UI for settings looks decent, they just need to flesh it out more. Either replicate the control panels functionality entirely and replace it or just stick with the control panel. Having both of these things is dumb IMO.

I do like the "task view" thing, a fancier version of alt+tab I guess but its the first feature ive seen added to windows in years that looks genuinely useful. The notification panel looks good as well.

Yeah the Start menu is going to take a bit getting used to, but the task view isn't really new, I used something like that for over a decade in Linux (in KDE or Gnome) and Mac OS has had it for a while too, I removed it from my taskbar.

oh that allowed me to change into a better resolution. but i get a error trying to install a driver.

I get a error saying "graphics driver is not compatible with my version of windows and it can not find compatible graphics card"

fucking hell.

Ugh. Dunno what I did differently, but I at least have the NVidia control panel and the latest driver. Perfomance on the .30 driver was awful (I play Americas Army Proving Grounds with friends; opening the score by holding tab dropped me from VSync at 60FPS to 5FPS. Switching to .62 resolved that.)

Turn off automatic driver downloads and once again remove EVERYTHING NVidia related and go again with the downloaded driver maybe?

So I just did my upgrade a while ago and started to play with it. Now I have not really used any of the preview builds

The process itself was fine, but some oddities

1 - if you open the system properties, seems to almost double open..
best way i can describe it is, it opens, then seems to close, and reopens just as it closes
seems to happen with any of the old control panel items from the WIN+X menu
2 - still cannot activate.. but that seems normal at the moment
3 - if I try to open a photo, as it defaults to photos app, it does not want to open.
my guess is cause i am not activated, easily fixed by changing it to the windows photo viewer
4 - cannot fully customize my start menu, want to get rid of the Most Used
5 - Don't have the download and install updates later even though I am on Pro
6 - don't like that for the desktop background, you cannot select a folder and browse the images like you could in win7/8
7 - Cortana not available in Canada? what the hell.. thought it was here too

Some items that I had to do but was somewhat expected
1 - install new nvidia drivers
2 - install nic drivers again. This was probably due to the fact that I had Hyper-V install in Win8.1 and did not turn it off first

I dual boot on my work computer. So I jump on my Windows 8.1 partition to upgrade. God damn what a pain. It was behind in updates so it took me a few hours to catch up. Once it was finally done, I force installed Windows 10 and the installer was corrupt twice. Had to delete the SoftwareDistribution folder and redownload. Now it's finally installed but it just locked up on me when logging into my domain account.

My home computer was a breeze last night. Took less than 30 minutes after the initial download.

Edit. Now the "Setting up your apps" screen is flashing like crazy.

Just an aside, but the 10240 install I have from updating preview builds (all the way back to 9784 or 9874 or whatever it was) still reports as being activated, which is cool.

This whole having to upgrade your computer first to get your key converted is BS. There should be an online app to enter in your old key and have it converted so we can use the fresh .iso installer.
