The new insider build has a new memory manager with a new compression scheme allowing it to retain more active software in memory.

I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 10. All the stupid icons look too large, but I have not bothered to look for the settings for that yet. I am using a 40" HDTV so that may have something to do with the odd look. I was surprised how well it set up my wireless keyboard and WIFI during the setup without any user intervention on the fly . . .

I did use the advance settings during setup and turned off some of the sharing stuff. I noticed a couple of time Edge tried to correct my spelling and changed one of my words. I really hate that. I like to see my own mistakes.

My wife was also starting to get the hang of it. However, she has a tablet so it is not like it is rocket science. I figure Win 10 is training me to use it. I did manage to take bing out of the default search engine and make it start on the Yahoo page so I can access my AT&T E-mail.

Just read the AT review. Nice that you can use game DVR to capture from the Edge browser. I could easily capture some live TV streaming. Also nice for tutorials.

Well I ran into my first glitch. I can't open my start menu! Hitting the start button or the windows key does nothing. Can't open the notifications on the right side either. I had noticed the notifications being a little slow to open sometimes, but no start menu is a little bit of a problem.

Ctrl+Alt+Del, signing out, and signing back in fixed it, but that's just weird.

*edit* notification center stopped working again. Start menu is still working, though sometimes a bit slow to respond. Like I click it, and a second or two later it opens. Or sometimes the notification/action center doesn't respond at first, but then clicking the start button will make it pop open.

Sigh.

Just upgraded my Thinkpad X200s (C2D L9400, 4GB RAM, 160GB X25-M) yesterday. It had been working perfectly with Windows 8.1 Pro.

Everything seemed to be going well, but a couple hours ago my system experienced a hard lock - mouse and keyboard stopped responding, and I needed a hard reset (Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing).

Hopefully this was just a fluke, but in my experience once your system crashes or BSODs, 90% of the time it's going to happen again. If/when it does, I guess my options are revert to 8.1 or do a clean install... any opinions on which is the better course of action?

Start menu not coming up happened to me on my tablet and I have it set to tablet mode, also task switching doesn't work 100% (like when I click on Chrome in start fullscreen menu it doesn't switch to Chrome automatically, just sits in the background).

I've had the Start Menu button crash a few times now. I'm on a clean install. That's what we have to deal with on a new OS, just gotta wait for it to be patched and service packed up.

In order to install in uefi mode you must set your installation device to uefi mode in the bios before attempting to install the os.

I built a new system and installed Win10 and everything defaulted to UEFI without me setting the installation USB drive to UEFI mode.

Do newer motherboards not have legacy BIOS mode anymore?

You have to set it in bios and tell it whether or not to use uefi only or a combination of legacy and uefi. I have both enabled but I could disable legacy and probably should to eliminate future problems.

I keep having a problem where I will copy files between HDD and external media (SD, USB thumb drive, etc) and they will *almost* finish relatively wast and then just hang at 99% or "5 seconds left" for many times longer than the rest of the file copy operation took. I had a particularly long wait earlier and almost gave up (better part of an hour).

I've had the Start menu problem so many times. I've even restarted twice and still had it.

It was much worse during the earlier builds but it is still there. Ridiculous.

Sounds like every other version of Windows.

D'oh! For some reason I read it as "......Also nice for funerals." I was like D:

I haven't kept up with this thread, so this problem may have already been mentioned.

I decided to roll back my Win10 upgrade to 7 before the 30 days is up. However, when I tried, Windows told me that files required to perform that step were removed.

I hadn't deleted any files because I had expected I would end up rolling back. After some googling, it turns out that if you use the media creation tool inside an upgraded Windows 10, it deletes your Windows.BT folder, making it impossible to roll back.

Yes, that's right, creating a Windows 10 disk/USB drive removes your ability to roll back. How absolutely idiotic.

Event logs are showing plenty of Cortana errors (maybe I should just turn it off, I don't have a mic readily available anyway), and a couple things like RemindersServer.exe and ShellExperienceHost.exe "stopped interacting with Windows and was closed" errors. Might be all related to the odd action center/volume/network/start menu issues.

Windows.BT isn't what you need to roll back, it's Windows.old.

10525 is starting to miff me off a bit, as the update removed a few apps I'm having to adjust for and reset.

It even removed the new CPUZ, and set if back to a review version again.

But I guess it is a newer beta.

Evaluation copy etc, I just hadn't gotten to that one I suppose as I'd seen it mentioned all ready.

more to it than that because that is exactly what I did. upgraded from a 7 clone on the 29th, made a usb installer this past weekend and rolled back soon after.

Poof! Out of the blue this morning my start menu quit. As did Edge(icon gone, empty space), the bar pop out thing on the right that tells you marginally useful stuff, cortana, and the new control panel settings thing. Pretty much everything that was new and not something that looked like a part of 8, quit working lol.. I google'd and tried a bunch of fixes (no shortage of suggestions online) with no luck. I also couldn't get to the refresh or reset or whatever they call it even though the OS worked fine if you didn't try to use any 10 stuff. It was really pretty amusing. Even in safe mode, even using a restore point from a couple days ago, nada, no start menu(or settings). Anyway, I finally, somehow, got settings to open through some backwards way and walking away from it for ten minutes and it magically appeared. Ran reset, worked perfectly. Reinstalled a few programs. I see more than ever the utility of installing software on other than the OS's partition.

That was a heck of an entertaining failure mode, and it managed to not loose me anything in the process. A less computer-ey person would have had a harder time with it but the OS recovered itself pretty gracefully once I gave in and did a reset. Is there no refresh in 10? The search results seem to suggest it used to be called refresh to not kill your personal files, but now seems to be reset across the board just with the option of retain your data or not.

I learned a long time ago to install my software and store my files on a drive other than the OS/boot drive. I"ve got the clean install routine down to a science and can have it up and running with all of my programs in about 4 hours. I don't clone anymore as I';d rather clean install everything from scratch so I don't build again on the possibility that there was an error buried in the other install.
