I'm not gonna go into what I started with, but only my main rig that has continually evolved. My first custom built machine was a Celeron 300A, which I didn't build myself, but knew enough about to pick out all the parts. The first rig I custom built myself was my Athlon 900 and continues on as the same system in spirit and the Soundblaster Live!

Athlon Tbird 900 --> Athlon Tbird 1200 --> AthlonXP 1600+ --> Dual AthlonXP 1800+ (modded to MP of course)

Asus A7V133 (KT133) --> Soyo Dragon Plus! (KT266a) --> Soltek 75DRV5 (KT333) --> Asus A7M266D (AMD 760MP)

128MB Mushkin PC150 --> 768MB Crucial PC133 CAS2 --> 512MB Crucial PC2100 --> 512MB Mushkin PC2700 --> 512MB Crucial PC2100 (sold the PC2700 when I switched to dual, since my board couldn't really take advantage of it without OCing)

Geforce 2 GTS 32MB --> Geforce 4 Ti 4600 --> Geforce 3 (I purchased the 4600 when it first came out, and felt it was simply too much...too much money considering that I got plenty of performance out of the Geforce 3 that I had picked up a week later for $100...although now I wish I had kept the 4600 because I'm starting to see the GF3 bog down in games)

I don't even remember all the CDROM and HDD changes. I've probably used about 8 different hard drives in this system and I've also switched CDROM to DVD and then back...only two CDRWs though. Acer 8x4x32x then to a Liteon 40x12x48x. I've used the same Sound Blaster Live! since I've had my Celeron 300 system. I've also been using the same case for the most part, but I switched to a sleek but small black aluminum case for awhile..when I got this dual board I had to go back to my larger tower.

This rig has had a lot of changing, but I still consider it the same machine just with constant upgrades to every component over the past 2 years. Keeps me on the edge and I never feel slow...while I never get that brand new machine feel anymore...ya know that BLAM I just wwent from a Athlon 900 and Geforce 2 to a Athlon 2000+ with a Radeon 9700...its ok because I never have that slow feel of being on an old system

Well, I've basically been using the same platform I have now since 1998. Here it goes:
1998:
Abit BH6, Celeron 300A @ 504MHz, 128MB PC100 SDRAM, 3dfx Voodoo3 3000, CTX 17" AG monitor, 8X Creative CD-ROM, Addtronics 6896A w/Channelwell 250W PSU

Since then, in as chronogically accurate an order as I can remember:
Changed monitor to Hitachi 21" Shadow Mask CRT
Added Creative Savage4 PCI 32MB card(staples offer) -> Dual monitor V3+S4, CTX+Hitachi
Added 128MB PC133 Mushkin RAM with IBM chips
Sold Hitachi 21", got Nokia 445XPro 21"(ubid deal)
Added 128MB PC133 Viking SDRAM

Sometime in 2000:
Changed 8X CD-ROM to 24X CD-ROM(roomie gave it to me for free)
Sold CTX, gave Creative Savage4 to brother, back to single monitor
Changed C300A to C533(mendocino) on Golden Orb+generic Slotket, only ran 600+MHz
Changed C533 to C566A(cumine-128) on same Golden Orb+Slotket, ran 850MHz on 1.8V

Sometime in 2002
Changed CD-ROM to ASUS DVD-E116 DVD-ROM
Added Silicon Image ATA133 IDE Controller
Changed 250W PSU to Enermax 431W
Changed faulty Mushkin PC133 SDRAM to another spare PC133 SDRAM I had lying around

Sometime in November 2002:
COMPLETE UPGRADE!
