Started off with a zenith 286 running dos 6.1 and wordperfect 5

That gave way to a homebuilt unit:

generic 486 mobo (can't remember the brand)-->shuttle hot 565--->Asus P3V4X

Intel 486-100 (o/c to 133)--> AMD K6 233 (o/c to 250)--->Intel PIII Cumine 550 (o/c to 733)

Trident VGA--->STB Virge PCI---> VooDoo 2000 PCI ---->Asus V7100 pure (Nvidia GE Force 2 MX)

SB 16---> Yamaha YMF 724

Generic case--->Enlight case----> generic case (again)

Generic VGA 15" monitor--->Digiview 15"--->Digiview 17"--->IBM G74

I am obviously in dire need of another upgrade huh??

My memory is not good enough for this thread Here is what I remember. I have had a lot more running than this, but it is a pretty good picture of my primary machine.

I used some Atari home computers in the 1980s, I don't remember the models. Dual 5 1/4 floppies.

IBM XT -> Tandy 286 -> Small Company 486DX25 (1989) -> Pentium 90 (Self built Tyan mobo)-> K6 200?(Self built, Tyan mobo) -> K6-II 400 (Self Built Asus P5A) -> P3 500 -> Celeren 566@850 (Asus P3B-F) -> P3 1.2GHz (supplied by employer at time) -> Athlon XP 2100+ (Asus A7V8X).

[Edit: Adding RAM as someone else put it below.

640K -> 1MB -> 8MB -> 32MB -> 64MB -> 128MB -> 384MB -> 512MB -> 1GB -> 1GB

Video cards that I remember:

Trident something -> Hercules Super VGA something (I think I still have it somewhere) -> ATI Mach 16 -> ATI Mach 32 -> Diamond Viper V550 (TNT) -> Asus V3800 Ultra Deluxe (TNT2 Ultra) -> Asus V6800 (GeForce 256 DDR) -> VisionTek GeForce3 -> ATI Radeon 9700 Pro.

Sound cards that I remember:

Soundblaster -> Soundblaster 16 -> Soundblaster 16 + Turtle Beach RIO -> Soundblaster AWE64 -> Soundblaster Live! Platinum -> Hercules GTXP

I have had various old Atari, Amiga, Sun, DEC, and X-terminal type stuff running too from time to time.

First computer: Timex/Sinclair 1000 (1981??)

Got back into computers, 1994? bought used IBM XT clone ($50), 4.77MHz, 20MB HD, 640K, upgraded to EGA video.
Then bought used 286 (10MHz, I think) 120MB, ? Ram. Had Win 3.1 on it, cost $125 used. HD bit the dust almost immediately.
Next was an IBM XT clone with an Intel inBoard 386-16 upgrade card, some wierd MFM 10MB HD, cost $90 used. Had problems running many programs.
Next was a Compaq all-in-one 486SX-25, 350MB HD, 9600 external modem, first time on the web (yay!) with AOL (boo!) cost $350 used.
Then I decided to build my own box.

Original box, built mid-'96:

Cyrix 5x86-120/Gigabyte 5486AL/8MB/1.2GB/4x CDROM/33600 modem/S3 Trio 1MB video/Everex sound card/14" monitor

AMD 5x86-133__K6-300__K6-2/500__Compuwiz Duron 650@900+__Athlon 1200__Athlon 1400__Athlon XP1600+
Ensoniq PCI sound card
Gigabyte 586TX3__Gigabyte 5AX__Abit KT7A-R__Abit KG7-R
16MB EDO__48MB EDO__64MB SDRAM__128MB SDRAM__512MB SDRAM__256MB PC2100
9.1GB 7200 IDE__2x 4.5GB 7200 UW-SCSI__9.1GB 7200 U2W SCSI__9.1GB 10k U160 SCSI
Voodoo2__Voodoo3__Voodoo5/GF256 DDR
Antec 300W__Antec 400W
4x SCSI CD-R__8x SCSI CD-R
17" Compaq__21" Mitsubishi

When I first built it, 8MB EDO was $75, and that was cheap!

I'll start with the new rig I built in Oct. 99

P3 450

Abit BE6-2 (2? May have been BE6 original)

Matrox Millenium G400 MAX

128MB PC100

Quantum Fireball KA 13.6GB 7200RPM ATA/66

Samsung Syncmaster 900p

-Upgrade 1 was 128MB PC133 in March '00

-Upgrades 2 & 3 in May '00: P3 550e@808, MSI 6309 Via Apollo Pro 133A board

-Upgrades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 in August '01: AMD Athlon (Thunderbird) 1.4GHz, Epox 8K7A, Hercules Prophet 4500 Kyro2, IBM 60GXP 40GB, 256MB Crucial PC2100

-Upgrade 9 in Sept '02: Planar CT1904Z

-Upgrade 10 in Sept/Oct '02: ATI AIW Radeon 8500DV

-Upgrade 11 coming soon: Trading for a Ti4x00 because UT2k3 is so good and I want to play at higher detail settings (have to play at 1280x1024 on this LCD) and I don't need the extra features of the 8500DV as it turns out.

9. P4. 1.6a, 512 DDR, 64 meg GF2 TI $525
10. Celeron 500, 256 SDR, $200 (File Server)

These cost estimates are VERY conservitive. I lost count og the number of cases, keyboards, monitors, modems, mice, CDR's, CDRW's floppies, fans, hard drives, etc. I know I've spent a good $5,000 on PC's in the past 5 years.
