Not doing so well right now...

i feel your pain sounds like me right now....

Believe me, you become numb after awhile. Tears help you get to the numbness quicker, I promise it does. Heh.

Personal Rate of Return from 01/01/2008 to 10/08/2008 is -26.1%

The actual dollar value is almost exactly the same as at the start of the year... this is depressing =P

It's turning out that the mistake may of been a good thing.

Now is a good time to fix that, stock prices are back to last century from everyone panic-selling.

I agree, I actually had meant to fix it earlier this year but ended up forgetting about it.

I don't know and don't care. I only log on to my 401K administration site twice a year to rebalance. I have 30 years still before I'll be tapping into any of this money. All I know is that right now my contributions are buying me twice as many shares as they were two years ago.

I help manage my mother's 401k, and it was down 13% before I was able to move it all to the most lowest risk option that her plan offers. I did this the week before Congress was voting on the bailout, so I saved the account from dropping another 10% at minimum. I don't think there will be any sense of normalcy to the market until after the election, or until Congress starts indicting these CEOs who made off with millions while their companies were on the verge of collapse.

A lot My piddly IRA I started 4 years ago, with $17000 in contributions, is now under $12000.

EDIT: Though I do have a 401(k) with roughly $1500 in it that's in a money market fund. That'll get me far.

If I stick in say 50k into my 401k and now its only worth 30k, what fees would I have to pay to take the money out and could I claim the losses on my taxes.

Awesome and Bush & Co wanted everyone to have their money in the market.

Even calculating recessions, the stock market has always offered the best LONG TERM return on your money. This current recession doesn't change that.

I wouldn't figure that would stop you from Republican bashing. As no facts would.

But if you are 5-10 years from retirement and have more than half your 401k still in stocks you're a fool. And you know what they say about fools and money.

As for you, KK, go for it man. Give Warren Buffet another 20K and then come back here and bitch about how the rich get richer and the poor get poorer next year.

Theoretically, could I claim the 20k loss, therefore it would only be a 14k loss?

A regular 401k is funded with pre-tax money, reducing your tax bill each year.

AFAIK if you take the money out, you'll owe taxes on the 30K, with no 20K loss to claim since you already deducted all 50K from gross income earlier.

So keeping it in your 401k makes more sense.

I haven't been looking at my statements.

I'm so far away from retirement, just letting it ride seemed like the best idea.

-29% before today's 7% bloodbath.

I've been slogging away $1200 a month since Jan 1 and can't even keep up.

My dad has been looking like the Oracle of Omaha this year. He's been bearish since last Christmas and has been 90+% out of the market, and only has about 5% in right now. He's UP about .5% YTD, even after today.

I told him "man you should feel good right now, now you've got mega buying power!" and he was like "nah, staying out, it's got more to go down and I can't risk it"

But he's 61 and just doesn't have the time horizon to take a hit right now. He got slammed in 99-2000, got it all back in recent years and has been at an all time personal high recently, and he does not want to get on the roller coaster again. Can't blame him. He can sit and make 3-4% in a money market and still make 10 grand a year.

If you *really* are sockin' away that much every month and can continue to do so(that's some serious $$$), then 5 years from now, you will probably be smiling the mother of all grins when you take a look at your statements at that time.
