How far into it are you? I actually restarted 6 or 7 times now as I kept realizing that I had gone too far into the Main Quest or made poor Weapon choices etc. I too found it awkward to play at first, but it gets much better as the story progresses.

Count me as one of this games biggest fans. I am a true FPS addict and have never liked RPG style games but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. seems to blend the best of both genres. Even with the occasional glitches and cut content, this game is a marvel to behold. A true living, breathing environment that never plays the same way twice and has me wanting to continue exploring even after "all" the endings. I think what makes it so creepy is the fact that Chernobyl is real and the story behind what happened as well as what is still happening there is just too tragic and eeirie. Sorry for my very uncharacteristic rant but I encourage any true gamer out there to give this game some time. Some have said the graphics are dated but I say they are phenomenal. Some say the story is boring but I say it's engrossing.

FYI, the game is also loosely based on an old Russian sci-fi novel called "Roadside Picnic". In that tale it was an alien landing that made the zone dangerous and full of anomalies. Then there was the Russian film "Stalker" which was based on the book and has been hailed as the Soviet version of 2001: A Space Odyssey. The developers of "Shadow of Chernobyl" have mastefully crafted a game that blends the book, movie and what happened in 1986 into a truly chilling storyline that almost seems plausible.

<fanboy like rant ends here....thank you for reading>

i watched the movie already and have the book sitting at home, but haven't read it yet.

The movie is cool but kind of confusing too. there are definitely some great visuals in it though.

Still early on. Give it more time, the game gets increasingly tense as you go on.

I can't get into the game either.

Too slow, runs like crap on my PC, just not an overall good experience.

Maybe I'll retry it when I get a better video card.

I'll be happy if I can beat the bugs and finish the game, the quicksaving/loading bug in Pripyat area is really annoying me

Seems a lot of users have the same problem if you go to their offical forums.

That's surprising Matt2. I checked out your rig and the specs seem more than sufficient to run the game. I went all the way through with an Asus W2Jb laptop which has a T2500 CPU, X1600 video card and 2GB memory. My game settings were about 2/3 of the way up with Dynamic Lighting on at 1440x900 res and I only experienced real slow gameplay in a few spots. There's a gamefile tweak on the net as well as a "float32" mod that reportedly gives the game a boost. I opted for tweaking some settings in the "STALKER-SHOC/user.ltx" file and I was very pleased with the performance gains on my rig.

nvidia GPU, right

EDIT: actually you are running a pretty high resolution ... what is that a 24" LCD?
:Q

your poor little Opty is *struggling* at that resolution

try 1:1 Pixel mapping and run it at 14x9 ... and i bet it picks right up

My bug with the Pripyat level was, the first time I could cross the stadium (race track or whatever it is)part and kill the Guass snipers and enter the next level.

I now get to the stadium and it goes into the cut scene,as soon as I enter it.

yes it is

it an extremely high resolution for an Opty to manage

what do you know about it?

--from what i can see from your posts in Video
nothing

you are a one-word comment wonder with nothing ever to back up what you say

perhaps you are right

Actually the Soviet version of 2001 would be 'Solaris', which is by the same director of Stalker (Andrei Tarkovski), which is also my favorite director...

Anyway, derail ends here.

first of all, your sig shows Dell ... Matt2 has a Gateway 24" FPD2485w

AND you should *know* that your C2D is a LOT more powerful than his Opty

and that our frame rates are mostly determined by the CPU ... your GTS supplies the details and AA/AF at 'that' resolution

i am asking *him* to TRY and lower his resolution to 14x9 to *see* if - suddenly - his rig no longer 'struggles'

since you don't have the *same* HW you cannot speak for him[period]

and neither can i ...

that is WHY i am asking him to try this simple test

would you rather we remain ignorant of the CPU-GPU interaction in this case?

and *nice* ... better than a single word reply

He still would be better off with a GPU upgrade. You might need to get glasses. I have yet in this thread to say anything in a Single Word.

[you and i have a "history" ... did you forget?]

Matt2 would be better off with a CPU and a GPU upgrade

that Opty would CHOKE a GTX ... and he would get few better frame rates with a GTS ... it would still *struggle* at about the same poor FPS ... but with AA/AF maxed and all details at "high" or "ultra"

if instead he got a C2D ... his FPS would shoot way up but he would get no more details or AA/AF over what he has now.

Yeah ill have to give it another shot. Busy playing Empire at war, CSS and Deus Ex. Im Surprised Deus Ex supports 1920x1200. The thing i like about STALKER is that when i went into the sewers its pretty damn scary with all the lighting and stuff. Freaks me out.

yes ... STALKER has that one pretty tense level - with the poltergeist throwing things - that's better than FEAR ...
--not quite the same as Thief DS Shalebridge Level

That was creepy to the max.
