so I believe that i screwed up windows

Yeah so I did something stupid. I attempted to change my boot screen. I backed up my ntoskrnl.exe twice, once to my desktop and once to another directory. Then I booted into safe mode and rewrote the files in system32. I restarted again, my fancy new boot screen shows up, and then my computer blue screens. So I went into safe mode to change it back.. And I blue screened. So I put in the windows xp cd and went into recovery, thinking I could just copy over the file while in dos. But every directory is denying access! I tried to copy it directly and it says Access is denied. I try to enter any directory EXCEPT for windows and it denies me access! I really don't know where to go from here, I've tried everything that I could think of.

I just formatted 2 weeks ago and already gave all of my backup cds away to friends I really hope that I don't have to format again.

yeah.. I'm in the repair install right now. It won't lemme access any outside directories, so I can't access the backups of the files I changed. It says "Access is denied" if I try to do anything to any directory other than c:/windows. I tried running fixboot and rewriting the master boot record, but neither worked :\

Not the recovery console. A repair installation. Boot from the cd and proceed as if you were doing a regular install. Xp will recognize a previous instance of XP and ask if you want to repair it.

ya, same thing I had to do when I installed a new mobo with everything else the same had to do a totally new install, but it kept all of the stuff from before so it didn't wipe it. good as new.
