So my girlfriend and I decided to try to get healthy. We've been way too super lazy lately, eating bad, not exercising, etc.

We started eating very natural, unprepared foods, cutting out all the junk crap we used to eat.

Then she decides she wants to start biking. I think its a great idea. I'm a big boy though (5'10, 350) so riding a bike didn't seem like a great option.

But I did something I never do, I just went to a bike shop, told them to set me up and they did. I got a nice mountain bike with good hardware that can support my weight.

I take it out last night (after not riding for 16 years) and holy crap its fun, but my ASS hurts like crazy. I think my butt/leg muscles are in complete shock and are punishing me accordingly. It's got a pretty small seat, which I put a gel cover on, but I think I'm going to have to get a bigger seat to support my fat ass.

How long does it normally take for your ass to get used to riding on a bike again? I feel like I just got outta county jail with Bubba as a cell mate.

Problem is you bought a bike.

Should have bought a motorcycle.

Ohhhhh, BIKING! Welps, too late now honey. Besides, this will be easy - you already know how to ride bitch!

it will take a bit, i got some bruising after a 15 miler the first time i went out this year, lasted about a week before i could sit on it again. pound bananas and protein for the muscles over the next few days and maybe try taking a hot bath or something, or alternatively a massage

You'll be saddle sore after the first couple of good rides, but then you will really have to put some seriously hard time in the saddle to feel it later.

I want one, but my g/f is too afraid I'll get hurt (I wouldn't put her through that kinda of worry everyday)

if possible, try getting a road bike.. They will hurt less.. remember, sometimes a big seat will hurt more than a small seat.. its tough to explain.. just google it..

You'll get used to it. Maybe. Or, you might want to check out some of the more comfortable bike seats.

They make many seats that are supposed to help minimize the issue. I cannot speak to their efficacy though.

Good job on getting on the bike and exercising. Your ass will get used to the saddle after a while. Maybe a few weeks of serious riding. If you can't tolerate it you can look for a softer saddle or a gel saddle.

Cool, because I want to ride more (like 2-4 mile trips) but I can't if my butt is gonna hurt this bad.

I'm afraid I'm gonna break the bike, but the guy at the shop said the only thing you have to worry about is the wheels, just don't take any jumps or super hard off the curb.

This is the bike I got:

Avalanche 3.0 Disc

Loose the gel cover and buy a pair of biking shorts. You don't have to buy the dorky looking spandex things. They make baggy normal looking shorts with liners so you don't feel like an idiot wearing them. You can also just wear athletic shorts over the spandex things.

Your suppose to have the saddle on the bike as you ride it...

you get use to the saddle once it's broken in a bit.

I'm not sure how long it would take for the average person that haven't ride a bike for a while to get use to riding.

It take me about 3-4 rides after a long winter season off my bike to get use to being on one again. And, it take me about 3 weeks of training to get back in my regular riding season shape.

I got back into running a few years back after I took over 10 years off running, and it took me about 4 or 5 weeks (3 days a week) of practice to not feeling pain on a 5 miles run.

That said, it probably take you any where from 3-15 religious rides (2-3 time per week) to get use to riding.

Congratulation and good luck!

It is going to take much more riding sessions than what I indicated above for you to get use to riding if your trips are 2-4 miles each.

My riding trips are around 45 miles each. If I remember correctly it take approximately 7-8 minutes (some study claimed 5 minutes) at 75-85% peak energy out put for your body to warm up and anything after that is what you need to lose weight/gain strength.

See a doctor, get a trainer, and join a cycling club if you are serious about health, losing weight, and gain strength.

On the plus side, if you don't, you won't fall off. :Q

Yeah it is going to take several rides to get used to it. I remember making the mistake of trying to go for a second ride the day after my first ride of the season. OUCH! I was limited to 2-3 times per week for a couple weeks. Now I could do a 20 mile ride every day and be fine.

This.

It's counter-intuitive, but a squishier saddle will actually make things worse. Definitely lose the gel cover.

Bike shorts will make a HUGE difference in ride comfort.

Stance of dominance at work, baby.

OP implies his girlfriend is also fat. But hey, I wish you luck in your quest for better health. People can get fat for many reasons and if you can put forth a good effort to lose some weight and get healthier, you will feel better about yourself. There are a lot of fat-bashers here on ATOT but I think most people are reacting to those who won't do anything to help their situation.

That is a good entry level bike. If you are not heavy, it should prove fairly bomb proof. Keep the tire psi near the max, it makes for less rolling resistance, and will help with minimizing pinch flats and tacoing a rim.

EDIT: I see you are a big guy, so yeah, watch the crashing curbs and stuff, and definitely keep those tires well inflated.

Already posted a picture of my girl, she's not fat at all.

For you who doubt me

Love is blind, I have a really good personality and I've never really had problems getting girls (whether I was 250 or 350, and I've been bigger than 350)

Trust me, I've had days where I wonder why she loves me, but I can't seem to get rid of her.

I'm a big guy also. I'm 5'10 295 and i havent been on a bike in years. When i got on one tho recently my ass really hurt. The seat i think is to small for me or something. Almost makes you not want to rid the bike doesnt it ? Because it really hurts.

im about 325 and 6'3" and the stock seat made me sore too, but i switched it out with a beach cruiser style and have had no probs with that one. well, until one of my dogs ate the seat, tires, tubes and handle grips off the bike. the gel made it worse for me too, but the leather one with a sheep cover was great.
