the other night I came home from work, and smelled burnt electronics all though the house... come to find out my linux p2 file server had lost its 50 something day uptime, and was powered down...
i feared the worst, burnt up motherboard and cpu and who knows what all else.. didnt have the courage to mess with it until last night.. so I powered it on, and immediately smelled burning again. took a quick glance, and saw smoke coming out hard and fast! yanked the plug, knowing i just fried something else now.
so I disassemble it to see if i could find what was fried... take out the 10/100 nic, seems okay. video, okay.. then I yank the 10mbit realtek ethernet card which handles the cable modem traffic, and one of the chips was still hot on it (everything else even cpu was cool by now).. and smelled way strong of burnt plastic and all that mess!
took it out, booted the box up with crossed fingers, and wouldn't you know everything works now..
a NIC card for cripes sake, the cheapest thing in this whole box was the one that bit the dust. I'm really psyched thats all it was, but who'da thunk a NIC would have a core meltdown? oh well... just thought I'd share
