I love the game, the combat is pretty engaging after I finally got the hang of it and i'm digging the storyline.

Unfortunately, the side quests seem REALLY stale! Every single one i've done so far are carbon copies, I land on a planet for about 2 minutes, go to an outpost thats an exact carbon copy of one that I was on 2 planets ago, and i'm out. No engaging story, not even that fun really.

Are all the side quests that aren't part of the main storyline like this?

A clear answer for a clear question: yes, pretty much.

As long as the side quest isn't a chain quest that involves speaking to multiple characters then you'll usually end up doing repeated generic tasks around. I absolutely adore Mass Effect, but if there's one thing that cannot be denied but by the most blinded of all fans is that indeed there are such side quests and they are numerous. But you shouldn't pay much attention to them, instead you should revel in those that were well fleshed out.

yea, the first game did have many lame quests like this, but a great overall storyline.
The second game has the mining mini-game which is pretty much the same thing, but necessary to upgrade your ship, which is critical for the endgame.

So ME2 is worth getting? I loved Dragon Age: O but hated part 2, seemed so rushed and lackluster. (thanks EA). I was just thinking about buying ME2 b/c i'm hooked to part 1.

Get it. The first 10 minutes will blow you away, especially after finishing ME1.

For many of us (many, I didn't say majority, so don't start that war here), ME2>ME1.

I would highly recommend getting ME2 if you enjoyed ME1; it doesn't follow in the footsteps of DA2.

I just started playing ME2 again, this time going for renegade.

It's been great, I forgot how much I loved this game. You don't have to deal with the moon buggy and getting stuck, searching around for stuff, etc.

I'm playing ME2, nearing the end of the game, after having played ME1 and loved it.
ME2 has much better quests. Even the side quests have some sort of story, and a number of them have follow-up quests. Most have cut scenes. Overall they really improved on the faceless side quest.

The mining mini-game is fun at first but gets tedious fast. I think I way over did it with that though, I’m running out of things to upgrade and have over 700k of materials, and near 200k ezzo. So, while I might be wrong, I think I could have done a lot less mining and it would not have been so tedious.

As far as the rest of the game goes, I like that you don’t have to do as much of the tedious equipment management, it really was annoying in the first game. But I think they went overboard with it, as now there is no meaningful choices when it comes to equipment.
The weapon load out screen just annoys me when it comes up before ever mission because there is no meaningful choices to make. I just take the highest level of each gun for each character, which is already pre-selected for me. I think it would have been better if they just removed equipment altogether rather then have it be a meaningless annoyance. My hope is that ME3 strikes a better balance in this issue. Give me a number of difference weapons and armor, with meaningful stats, to choose from but don’t make me pick up eleventy hundred of them to sell. I’m saving the galaxy not in the recycling business. One of each type is enough. Or optionally, one for each character making me chose who gets which weapon.

Yeah the sidequests in ME1 are very weak. The main storyline however is awesome (last hour is unforgettable)

ME2 is most definitely worth getting. It's a gaming gem that shouldn't be missed by any gamer.

Just finished it, wow what a game. Ending was great, I even watched all of the credits. I even saw Marinia Sirtis' name in there as a voiceover,
I thought Benezia's voice sounded familiar, lol. There hasn't been a PC gaming end sequence that i've liked in a while - I thought
i'd like Dragon Age: O's ending but it was too short and predictable.....ME though! Damn, reminds me of the old days of games with epic endings.

Can't wait for ME2.....the side quests not being lame sounds like a big plus.

Bioware....hasn't disappointed me yet! I'm convinced that DA2 was EA's doing and not bioware's.

I let them wrex and the council die! Did I make the wrong choice :|
Same here. Wrex pulled a gun on Sheppard, but Ash had his back. Wrex was a bomb waiting to go off. Aa for the council - they seems extremely unimportant in the greater scheme of things at the time, even if their death may have had far reaching consequences.

yep, the biggest problem with mass effect are the cloned pirate/merc bases for all of the sidequests/random encounters while exploring planets. For those of us that like to do everything that we can, it gets really really stale going from non-priority planet to planet in between story and loyalty missions.

that, and the inventory sucks up your time.

Though, with ME2 and their horrible mining system, you might learn to envy the repetitive merc bases of ME1. (the actual side quests and random encounters in ME2 are far, far better though).

ME2 is great, but I didn't like it as much as the first (better story in ME1).

ME2 is more seamless and polished as an action-heavy shooter-style "lite RPG," though.

this works for the ME games, because that's what they are. DA2 was such a disappointment because that franchise had established itself as the classic PC-style team-oriented rpg, and DA2 tried to be ME...or so people say. I still haven't played it.

ME2 is a gorgeous-looking game, though. If you like the feel and style of the first 1, ME2 improves on it in every way, and the action is more intense, intuitive, and seamless.

Though I liked it much more than the first all the way up until the end, the end of ME2 put it below ME1. story is....eh.

Avoid the side quests especially the ones that require driving around random planets. They slow down the awesome story line and may even kill your enjoyment of the game.
Baldurs Gate and KOTOR had excellent side quests, I dont know what happened here.

D:

horrible!

I saved the council, too (twice, I think), but they are better off dead. completely useless assholes all around.

I've always saved the Council too. Although, things wouldn't be better off with having a human only or human dominated Council. If given the chance, I would make Anderson the boss.

I liked the end of ME2, but I agree ME1 had a sick ending (starting with the revelations from that prothean computer)

I loved both games, and there were a few minor things in ME2 that I didnt like at first, but I think I enjoyed it even more overall. Amazing game. Talk about complete immersion. Fantastic environments, great characters, all around just awesome. It's one of those games that reminded me why I love being a gamer so much.
