So I got a ticket tonight for violating the Move Over Act.

My friend and I went out for a drive tonight. Didn't really care where we were going, we just wanted to drive and listen to some music. Anyway we were on the highway and there was a section where the speed was reduced. Of course there were about 10 cops there waiting to catch people who didn't slow down fast enough. Luckly I saw the sign and slowed down. I thought I would be fine.... but I was wrong.

There were about 3 cops I saw with their lights on that had pulled people over. I was going pretty slow in the right lane, about 55. The speed limit was 60. I passed by one of the cops that had his lights on. He was walking back to his car after just giving someone a ticket. As soon as he got in his car he turned his lights on and came after me. I was sitting there thinking WTF could he have possibly pulled me over for.

He comes up and tells me (in the most rude, obnoxious, assholish way) that I did not move over into the passing lane when I went by him. He makes me wait about 20min then comes back with a ticket for $115.50 saying I violated the Move Over Act. I asked if this would add points and he said yes and also remarked that I should "just try comming to court. The judge would love to see me". What a complete asshole.

I didn't even know this was a real law but apparently snopes says it is. I live in FL so I guess they must have JUST passed it. Anyone ever get pulled over for this before? Can I fight this? I have to leave for college in a week so I probably won't even be able to get a court date before then.

Cliffs: Asshole cop pulls me over. Gives me a $115.50 ticket for violating the move over act.

I think Texas has one of these laws too, I just figured it was common curtousey to move over a lane so that you don't pass too closely to anyone pulled off to the side.
Sucks that the cop was a powertripping asswipe though.

How new is the law? If you haven't heard of it before, the judge may take it into consideration. Take it to court regardless, lawmakers do have the duty to make new laws known to the masses.

Wow that sucks. I just got a ticket for doing 80 in a 65 on a goddamn told road (the 73 for those of you in SoCal). He was 'hiding' down the crest of a hill, right after the toll booths. So of course everyone is gunning it to get back up to speed after the toll booths, and I get nailed.

No doubt I was speeding and the ticket is legit, but it still sucks. Worst part is that the OC does not accept online traffic school, so now I have to waste a weekend day in a freaking hotel conf room or somewhere in traffic school. Oh wel...

Never been pulled over for this. But where I live, they even have billboards and the State is doing PR on it, so most people must know about it, unless ignorant.

Ignorance of the law is NEVER an excuse for disobeying the law, but I would talk to the DA or plead not guilty. Perhaps you could get a reduced sentence or deferred prosecution.

Sometimes the prosecuting attorney will cut you a break if you appear in person, act remorseful, and plead your case.

PSA: Some cops are dicks. Some are not.

If you live in FL call 800-Citation, its the traffic clinic and they've gotten me out of every single ticket I've ever received, which for awhile there was a lot.

Normally I would, however there were people in the left lane passing me at about 75mph. I was doing 55. I could be wrong but I don't think there was room for me to change lanes.

I got pulled over in Texas for the very same thing. The cop was stern but didn't act like a butthole. I only got a warning since I was from out of state.

just say there was a car next to you...have him try and prove otherwise (he was walking back to his car, it's possible it could have been parallel with you)

I think the reasoning is that it will prevent cops being killed by motorists zooming by at 70 about 4 feet from the pull-over scene. How many vids have you seen of this?

I think it's a good law, but they should warn people HEAVILY before enforcing the law.

Yea, because lieing in court when there is an officer as a witness is an incredibly intelligent thing to do.

Look people, laws like this one and double fines in workzones are being implimented because the majority of people out there are stupid and putting in danger the public servants and construction workers that are out there to keep our highways safe. Obey the law and stop bitching if you get a ticket for putting someones life in danger.
