That apartment would probably cost $4k/month in central London.

The show "The OC" wasn't filmed in Orange County. Mostly shot in Malibu. Some stock filming was done for intros and transition scenes. Written by Hollywood writers that only there west LA lifestyle.

I don't come across a lot of pretentious people in OC. Maybe they do it just for you.
Plus your demographics are wrong. Between Fullerton and Irvine, McMansions? These are dominantly in south county, which is south of Irvine. And north county cookie cutter suburbans would be Yorba Linda and Brea.

QFT

For that price it better come with free BJ's.

That isn't dick for a penthouse in a significant urban area.

The assessments on my 1br 1.5ba 1000sq ft condo (high rise) are closing in on $600/mo.

No. Nothing in there described me. However since you have the habit of labeling people, maybe you are living up to your schmuck namesake.

LA is a slum. Chicago is a nicer town and cheaper, I would suggest moving there but we don't want any Kaleeforneans.

Wow those prices are high for what you get(i mean the area). With how real estate market is doing, i am not sure why anyone in the right mind would buy anything at downtown right. Especially at those prices

See my previous post. About the same price, maybe a little higher, as houses here in Vancouver Canada.

Subjective. Everyone enjoys a different climate. I don't think anyone enjoys Mexico invading or the high crime rate in LA.

Edit - ah I see you're in Glendale. I used to manage one of my company's satellite offices in Glendale. I cringed when I had to travel there. Although it's not as enjoyableness as other areas in LA I will admit.

it's horrible prices like those that keep LA from getting a legitimate middle class revival. In the end, we will always have a few nice places, and a ton of slum. In order for LA to progress into a respectable city, it must have enough to accomodate all demographics- not just the rich and poor (and I mean DTLA area, not LA County). The skyline of LA is pathetically empty compared to any major city out there, and is very reflective of the contrast in rich/poor.

That's not the reason why the skyline is shaped like that. The LA Basin is huge. It's easier to expand outwards rather than upwards. Big skylines were due to the lack of real estate. LA had plenty of real estate to offer for decades. DTLA catered to corporations, small businesses, and hotels.

Hold off for a year or so at least those prices will come down a lot. People still live in fantasy land with what the value is on their homes, that?s why you see houses on the market for over a year or they take them off and re-list them every 6 month to not look so desperate. When you do see a place sell I don?t think they are showing how much money is passing under the table, another reason the prices seem to not be coming down.

The city is trying very hard to make the Downtown area nice but it is still not a safe place for the most part and has a long way to go. Forget it if you have or plan to have kids in the near future. Downtown LA also doesn?t have the same feel as most other cities downtowns. I have two single friends that are looking at the same area as you OP and they are waiting to see how low the market is going to go.

LOL @ the prices at the OP.

Over the weekend, I went out and did some checking and I could get a brand new stand alone custom made house at a brand new subdivision with a brand new soon to be open elementary school for around 175K with HOA about $25/month.

The house (1575 sq. ft) will have a big backyard with a view of a natural lake/creek in a metro area of around 300K.

Not sure the house in DTLA is 3X+ better.

not surprising. Downtown LA is really on the come up.

Considering the condition of it over the last 30 years it could really only go up.

I'm surprised you can type at all, without your frostbitten fingers falling off and shattering on the ground a la Robert Patrick's T1000.

I'm in the midwest and it's going to be mid 50s and sunny today.

Yes, it does get cold here for a few months of the year. We deal with it because we have a little thing called central heat. It's not that difficult of a concept.

And while we deal with the cold for a few months, Californians deal with high taxes, high crime rates, and high poverty rates all year long. When I was in California, I usually found myself in a nice area with absurdly high costs of living or ghetto-like areas where few people spoke English. The only "high density" middle-class areas I knew of was the inland empire. I was there once, it was more a desert than anything else.

Also, heaven forbid you find yourself in the wrong neighborhood. You might as well be in a third world nation, places even the police refuse to go. I've never taken a wrong turn in the midwest and found myself fearing for my safety. When I was there last, my ex-girlfriend's dad drove me around and pointed out all the places where I'm not welcome (he was an ex-cop in the city). He also complained about the fact that the city had to constantly come by a re-paint his concrete wall facing the street as it kept getting marked by gangs. These are things that I don't experience here, and things I don't think I want to live with, no matter how good the weather.

The first time I was in California (La Jolla), it was sunny during the morning and overcast all afternoon. I wish I had known about June Gloom before I picked that month.

What is HOA? Home owners association? Is that similar to a condo fee?

I can't imagine buying a home and having to pay a regular fee on top of it.

I once found myself in the wrong neighborhood. I got shot, shanked, raped, AND jacked.

And then I turned off GTA.

Funny I live in a "poorer" neighborhood and nothing has ever happened to me. But I'm enjoying my 78' weather and fantastic culinary options

I would first learn about what HOA/COA's are and then see the levels of service some bring to the table. You couldn't get by on just hiring 'one' person. There is way more to it than that.

Also on million dollar properties the $850 is really nothing.
