Is it true you can hook up the firewire from than and copy things to your pc?
Yes, it's true.
I've used up 2 250GB HDD to record some 720/1080p movies from HBO, Showtime and Starz HD. Also some documentaries from Discovery HD. The quality of the movies from DVDs pale in comparison.
Provided DTCP copy protection isn't enabled. All cable systems will enable it eventually. Comacst has it on sporatically in my area, working the bugs out.
So, when DTCP over Firewire is enabled, your box will show nada over component/Firewire outputs when a non-compliant device (ieC) is connected. I've tried it, and it works.
You will however be able to record all unprotected (locals) channels.
