So I have a "discussion" with a friend today about AMD and Intel

I love Intel/AMD and will never buy AMD/Intel.

What's funny is how much CPU design info the 2 companies share. I secretly hope that both companies are laughing together at the "fanbois".

Ford and Chevy are even making a new auto tranny together.

Walmart sells more crap than anyone else, but that doesn't make them "better". It just means that they sell more crap because they've got more resources than anyone else. Having a better product doesn't necessarily promote sales either - good marketing definitely helps. A good number of people will probably give an answer containing "Intel" if you ask what a processor is. Intel Inside - marketing that worked.

2. He says A64 uses technology that isn't practical today (even though he agrees it might be practical in a year or so).
3. He calls his tower his "hard drive"
4. Why does Itanium make Intel>AMD for us general computer users!!!

1.) Better is subjective. But for me, I like AMD - more processing per dollar than Intel.
2.) Can't comment, don't know much about A64
3.) And he calls the monitor a "computer" right? This one can definitely be proven.
4.) Because Itanium sounds like titanium. Must be good.

just because someone prefers something else then you, doesn't make him an idiot. i for one prefer Intel because the Chipsets they work with are developed by the same manufacturer, and tend to give you less issues. i gladly trade the 5 FPS in a game for that. i have a Northwood 3.0 Ghz coupled with a I875P, wich is more then enough speed for me at the moment.

You mean like the chipsets they just recalled ? I realize you did say "tend to give you less" but even that is not correct IMO. The only bad chipsets I have seen, are ALI and one or two VIA sets. I usually Prefer ATI for video, but they make a GREAT chipset, AND their latest video cards rock ! I also have a SCSI controller card that I paid quite a bit for (SRCU21 or something like that) and come to find out it is designed to ONLY work with an Intel chipset motherboard ! That is crap ! like getting a Dell, and you can only have a Dell PSU to power it. Oh, wait, they think like Intel, because they are in bed together ??

Simply run PC mark on both machines, and compare your score to his. That's the only way he'll understand. Obviously he has no real knowledge of computers if he thinks Intel is better than AMD. Intel is the "Playstation" of the PC industry. They sell on name alone even though there are better products on the market. It's called branding and it's the same reason why Intel won't drop the idiotic MHz in their ads.

If yours is an A64 it is very easy..... take both against each other. Facts will prevail. By the way, if testing video encoding, please try something more than just the XMPEG + DivX done by many pseudo-sites..... Encode to DivX using at least 4 applications, and use other codecs / containers also. If you have a commercial video edition package, throw it into the mix. Results will help you clear the myth of "P4 better for video"

Though unfortunately Prescott doesn't look too atractive right now to me at least :S Happy for Nvidia though the Geforce 6 Series is awesomely attractive

i say until pentium 64s come out, u cant compare teh two. its like comparing a race between a man in his late teens and a boy in his early teens. the older one will probably win because he is closer to his prime.(not saying AMD primed.......). ppl are comparing a64 fx-53 to p4 3.2 wen its useless comparing now. its like comparing amd xp 3000 to a amd 64 3000. no chance at all.

Speaking of hatred, the AMD lovers here have far more hatred than Intel lovers. Just an observation

I think it has more to do with the fact that there are more AMD fanatics around here.

personally, i don't care who's in bed with who. for all I care all of them can jump in bed together and have themselves a technology-gangbang, as long as they make parts that actually work together!

all I'm saying is that there are not just reasons to buy AMD, there are reasons to buy Intel as well. granted, nowadays, the AMD pro's seem to be bigger then the cons for most people, but just because i happen to belong to the other group doesn't make me an idiot, or worse: a narrow minded techno-racist.

I simply prefer the "feel" of an intel CPU with an Intel chipset to the AMD stuff. for what I do with my rig (development, Photoshop, and office stuff) I simply want the most compatible, standardized machine possible. this is what i have now:


-Intel P IV 3,0 Ghz Northwood
- Asus P4C800 I875P
- 1024 MB Twinmos PC3200
- Asus 9600XT
- Maxtor 160 GB SATA
-Antec SLK3700AMB


and it is suits my needs perfectly.stable as a rock, very cool, is faster then I am. so who are you to tell me i should've gone with AMD?
