So I have this i-Drive 6.0 in a box in my livingroom...

Just a stupid question for the day. Trying to decide between gray & red.

Any nay-sayers before I order myself a GT I-drive 6.0? I know the components aren't the best, but it will be by far the best bike I've ever owned & based on the reviews it should give me a decent starting platform to upgrade. It will see very light use compared to what it's designed to take, so I'm not worried about the potential warranty claim problems (due to GT no longer existing).

Any thoughts before I do this? I've been feeling the urge to ride for a few days now, & for $399 (MSRP of $700) it seems like a decent deal.

Aluminum bikes blow overall. Unless you weigh over 180 pounds, aluminum frames are just too stiff to give a comfortable ride. Just my opinion, but I feel like I've been run through a torture chamber after an hour on the trail

That was a $400 GT, this is a $700 GT on clearance (it's a 2001 model).

BTW, I weigh ~210, so over 180 is definitely met.

And here's a picture (red)

Well Viper does weigh over 180. I do too - I bought an aluminum frame recently. I don't know much about bikes but I do like how the frame is guaranteed for life, will never rust, and is a tad lighter than steel.

BTW viper are you going to be doing road or trail riding? I think you'll find that most people would agree a full suspension bike isn't a great choice for road. A lot of people won't even use a hardtail because the front suspension is inefficient as well if all you ever do is road riding.

Aluminum can be painted, anodized, powder coated, plasma coated, plastic coated, just about anything, really. It isn't always anodized. Paint sticks just fine to aluminum with a proper primer or powder coat.

Road for now, though that may change. Depends on how much I decide I like it.

I-Drives are FS bikes, dont worry about getting beat up. GT bikes rule, I still ride my Zaskar and love it after ~4 years now.

GTs were generally nice bikes, and I am sad to see them leave the shrinking US bike market.

I say if you get the bike, go red. I am getting a bit bored with looking at my battleship-gray titanium bikes, and am considering a paint job for one of them just to spruce it up. Plus, anyone will tell you that red bikes are faster!

This is true. I have a 2001 Specialized Rockhopper Comp which has an aluminum frame and is indeed painted.

I rode my fisher hard tail 50 miles from Rosarito to Ensenada and can safely say that mtn bikes are a whole lot more fun in the dirt. You should have some pretty nice trails up there.

One thing that makes a big difference is clipless pedals. It took me a few rides to get used to them, but now I'm hooked.

Don't forget GT is no more.

Getting an I Drive warranty handled will be impossible and getting parts may be a problem.

Go to a bike shop and look at what they have. Talk to them. Find a shop you feel comfortable with and buy a bike. A good bike shop is invaluable when you are just starting.

Most any major bike brand (not walmart type) will do you good.

Remember....a helmet is your friend as is a skull with no cracks.

Look here for advice: MTBR, check out the forums.

Other good sites: mountainbike.com and bikereviews.com.

Cheers.........

That's the *best* thing about riding in Oregon. You don't have to worry about some Grandma getting in your way because 99% of the people in this state act like they're made of sugar!

ViperGTS,

For $400, you really can't go wrong. I'm not a fan of GT now that they've been bought out, but $400 is a good price for an I-drive.

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....Zaskar. I was looking at an LE for quite a while before I decided that I don't need a third bike for the time being (have one FS, one Cyclocross).

Rob (former GT fan; I'll stick with Specialized now)

This is a 2001 clearance model, specifically this.

My other option is an Aggressor, also on closeout.

It looks decent. However, there are a bunch of questions that you should tackle at a local bike shop before deciding to go w/Supergo:

1. Have you ridden an I-drive? Make sure the size is correct; make sure that the bike suits your riding style.

2. Why is it that you want a FS bike? Remember that they are often harder to maintain and you will be getting lower quality parts (front shock, deraileurs, etc.) compared to a similarly-priced Hardtail.

Um... All my bikes - road, freeride, xc - are painted.
