Last weekend, a buddy brought in his broken system and gave it to me. Right on, a free fixer-upper for me. It was never stable for him, so I determined it was the MB after a weekend of tinkering. Here are the specs of the system.

Barton core Athlon XP 2600+
FSB ???. Did the 2600+ come in a 400 FSB? I haven't seen the code on the CPU. It was purchased in mid '03.
MSI K7N2 Delta-L
1 GB of DDR 400 Kingston HyperX
Radeon 9800 Pro
Antec Truepower 380

I think that's everything. Another friend has an old Epox EP8KHA motherboard around he's not using. Link to the board Would the Epox work with the Barton 2600+? It supported the 2600+ T-Bred, but it's only a 266 FSB chipset, the KT266. Should I get a different MB instead, and are there any good S-462 mb's in stock anywhere? I'm planning on using it as a Linux system if I get it working, and I'm not going to be overclocking. Thanks for your opinions.

All Barton cores (except the mobile versions) have a 166 Mhz FSB. And if you want to buy a Socket A motherboard, you're likely going to have to buy a used one. Here's a good place to start looking. I see Socket A boards in there all the time.

The last generation of them were bumped up to 400Mhz FSB but I don't believe the 2600+ was ever produced with that. The rest had 333MHz FSB

2600+ barton was 333MHz FSB (166MHz x2). The 3200+ and up was 400MHz FSB. I think there might have been some older T-bred 2600+ CPUs that were 266MHz FSB, which is what that epox that the OP linked to supports. It wouldn't take the barton well though.

well, even if the Athlon XP architechture was never designed to be run at 200Mhz FSB, i've been running it every since i got my Athlon XP-M 2400+. rock solid at 200x11.

I've purchased over 20 Socket A mobos, cpus, etc. from the FS/FT forums.

That forum is a great resource to pick up cheap stuff. You can expect to find a suitable mobo for around $20-25 shipped.

that is a decent rig. hell, see if you can rma the m/b - the most msi can say is no.

are you sure it is a barton? have you run cpu-z on it?

i think there were also 400MHz 3000s too, but can't remember for sure. either the fs/ft forum her or over at 2cpu.com = excellent deals. between the 2 have saved me thousands of $$$ throughout the years

asus had a kick ass m/b for the skt a stuff, like a a7n8x or soemthing like that....

I've got a brand new AOPEN AK79D MAX400 NFORCE2-D RTL mb http://www.neoseeker.com/Articles/Hardware/Reviews/AK79D/ that I've had sitting in a drawer. Yes I bought it new and never used it and only opened the box up to confirm that all of its contents were present. I had one go bad and bought a new abit nf7-s to replace it with and when this came back I didn't need it so I put it in a drawer where it has sat ever since. I live in Jacksonville, FL so if you are interested PM me.
