how does this compare to the 80gb intel SSD which is almost the same price?

If you assume it uses the Sandforce 1500 controller (looking at the specs it appears to be) then it is faster than the Intel, in some cases considerably so.

The Sandforce drives have a huge section (not sure of the exact size) of the drive set aside for overhead. This means you can fill the drive up closer to max with less of a performance drop than an Intel or any other SSD.

isn't that review for the 100gb version though? will there be a difference between the two?

It has the 100GB Vertex LE (Sandforce), the 100GB OWC (Sandforce), and the 50GB OWC (Sandforce). The 50GB Vertex LE should be the same drive as the 50GB OWC, but reading the recent Anand review on his sitdown with Sandforce that may not be true.

It appears that the OWC 50GB (and possibly all the OWC drives now) are Sandforce 1200 and not Sandforce 1500, which is supposed to cripple the 4k Write IOPS. This graph seems to support that:

Yes, IF it is a SF 1500 controller, you can guess it will be in the same performance range as the LE 100g.

Anand needs to dissect this 50g and tells us whats what

How do you tell if Trim is enabled with windows 7?

the only way I know is from an elevated command prompt using: fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

Results explained below:
DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)
DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

when I use this with my raid 0 vertex LE's I get DisableDeleteNotify = 0, so according to Windows 7 Trim is enabled???

On OCZ's forums, OCZ is claiming their 50GB uses the 1500 controller.

I'd love to see Anand review the 50GB Vertex LE and see how it stacks up, as a few of those in RAID-0 seem to be on the horizon for me.

I agree. I would get a couple for my AVCHD machine (rig2)

Sorry but TRIM is not supported with these drivers on RAID0 or any other RAID volume. TRIM will work with (non member RAID) drives when the system is set to RAID in the BIOS, but you will not have TRIM support on any drive in a RAID array.

Wendy I don't profess to be an expert on SSD's but when I run "fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify" from an elevated command prompt, Windows 7 say's that Trim is enabled. Is Windows 7 reporting falsely? My raided hardrives are far from being full and I've seen no degradation as of yet.

It is not reported falsely "fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify" states if TRIM is enabled at the OS level. If it returns a value of 0, then TRIM is enabled at the OS level, if it returns a 1, then TRIM is disabled at the OS level.

Saying TRIM is enabled at the OS level, then Win7 will quite happily issue the TRIM command at the appropriate time. However, that command has to pass down the ATA stack to the SSD before it can do anything. Unfortunately, when you have SSDs in a RAID volume, that command never reaches the drives in the RAID array with this version of the RST drivers.

Intel themselves claimed that TRIM was enabled with this version of the RST drivers with SSDs in a RAID volume, with the initial release notes for the drivers, but after some people querying if TRIM was really working on a RAID volume, they released a statement saying they had made an error in the release notes, and TRIM after all, was not enabled on a RAID volume, and they (Intel) would try to get this working on a later release of the RST drivers.

Sandforce drives do apparently have a good deal of over-provisioned NAND, and a good GC, or as Sandforce like to call it, "DuraWrite/DuraClass". This will work on a RAID volume, and keep the drive clean. This however should not be confused with TRIM. TRIM is a different method of cleaning the NAND.
