Should I install the WD software for it or is it a waste of time to do so, does the drive have built in cleanup functions to make it last longer without the

Unless the software is awfully made, I generally install the toolkit for any NVM-e SSDs I have. You can simply set it to not auto-launch so you can open it periodically as you wish to check drive health and for firmware updates.

WD and Samsung both have decent softwares. Others not so much.

I've got an SN750, it's a very nice drive. The software is reasonably useful, even if it's to check the health of the drive. Mine is in a work PC, so I don't do game mode, either. You also get the free WD version of Acronis, which is nice.

Is it necessary? No. I believe Windows (assuming W10...) handles trim and garbage collection.

Feel free to install it and uninstall once you're done playing with it. I often do that with Intel's SSD Toolbox. Anytime they release a new firmware, use that to update then when done, uninstall.
