Your PC would also look like crap running through a composite connection to an SDTV.
I have played Oblivion, Burnout, Perfect Dark, and Dead Rising on the X360 in both SDTV/PAL and 720p and they looked like crap. The X360 doesn't even render anisotropic filtering from what I can see.

As I've said; The rig in my signature costed £800 (that includes the monitor and speakers.) The X360 and LG 720p LCD my friend has costed £800 (that does not include his sound system.)
My friend was pissed when he saw my PC playing Oblivion in 1440x900 (ooh, 900p!) with HDR, 6xAA, 16xAF, and a load of eye-candy mods. He is now planning to recoup his losses by selling his X360 etc. high and upgrade his already half-decent PC to my spec.
ugh the reason including a large hdtvs cost is unfair and unreasonble is becuase you are comparing a 19" lcd vs something much larger which is just absurd. if you are gonig to include display prices than include displays of the same price, which basically makes doing such a thing pointless. larger screen = more immersive, no way around it, larger screen is also more costly regardless of platform.
so to be fair and honest you have to do this. your friend spend $1515/£800 on his xbox+hdtv. that means the screen cost atleast $1100 assuming he bougth xbox premium. $1200 if he bought core.
now add a screen of equivalent price(very very easily to do with pc's) to your pc and your pc now costs $2200-$2756 dollars depending on how much we assume your pc cost. thats £1,454 btw. either way its not a savings. and that money isn't going to buy you a screen of equivalent size for watching films either.
so either way you spent over double just for the computer and thats assuming you bought some sh*t parts along with the main internals.
more realistically its almost 4 times more.
pricing from newegg when possible
Intel Core duo2 E6300 $180.00
scythe ninja plus 39.99
2048MB OCZ GOLD 2GB DDR2 800 $240
Connect3D Radeon X1900XT 512MB $353
Zalman VF900-CU VGA Cooler $48.99
case(i'll pretend you bought garbage) $50
psu(same assumption to be charitable) $50
kb + mouse(same assumption) $20
m/b (same assumption) $99
harddrive(same assumption) $99
optical drive(same assumption) $75
total :
$1254 excluding tax and shipping
now assuming the average pc gamer isn't a cheap skate cutting corners like that
change harddrive to $200
change mouse to $50
change keyboard to $20
change case to $100
change psu to $100
change m/b to $150
New total:
$1556 or £821excluding tax and shipping
and all this is excluding labor and fustration, installtion/debug/shopping of course.
so as i said, you are not being reasonble, you are a l33t geek who lives in a bubble.
oops i forgot the o/s. and no, i really don't think you are playing games on linux add another $99 just for xp home.
