I shorted out this board because i didn't use spacers. the put between the board and case. Now i wanna make sure i dont run into any of these issues the 2nd time around. i put the spacers in now. what else can you give me tips on doing this right the 2nd time around.

this is my 2nd build , my first was a build off a barebone system, so i was all setup already. I know how to finish up the build after the motherboard and cpu have been setup.

Also anyone know of cheap 1.2ghz AMD socket A boards that take sd-ram please let me know

You may have killed it. If it wont work outside the case, I don't know what to tell you except to make sure the cpu hs fan is plugged into the proper header.

When you took the motherboard out and tried running it - did you have it resting against any metal or electricity-conductive material? Those little threader devices keep the motherboard from touching the case - and are quite important. When you get your motherboard - you will have to look at the board and remember the locations of the screws - even draw it down onto paper if that helps you, so you can match up where you need to put those little brass threaders in your case. The holes in the side of your case are plentiful enough that it allows for a few different motherboard types, and if you even put just one threader in a wrong hole (IE a hole where there is not a hole on your motherboard) - then you will most likely make the motherboard short out and spazz.

Try placing it on a surface that won't possibly short it out - like a wooden desk or a cardboard box - and see what happens. Make sure all the cables are fit snug and are plugged in properly. Make sure your ram is in right - and also try just one bar of ram in the first DIMM slot to make sure the ram isn't shorted out instead of the board, or something silly like that. Good luck.

I have built many PC's, I always use the brass spacers that comes with the mobo. But I dont use washers. Is this the right way to do it.

What screws are reccomended.

I put together some tips here that cover the assembly of a computer start to finish, if that's any help. It has coverage of installing heatsinks too, I know you mentioned you hadn't done that part before.
