So, I think im going to get Vista x64 for chrismas

Ok, so while I don't think anything terribly bad will happen, I have had bad experiences with 64bit OS in the past, mainly linux 64 bit (as they have been around the longest.)

Well, the time for a 64bit os has come, I want to upgrade my computer to 4-8gb of ram and I need a x64 operating system for the task. Ubuntu has been great for me, but too many driver quirks and the lack of full game support are starting to wear on me. (and since I discovered cygwin, bash for windows, I feel I can get the best of both worlds).

So, I'm just looking for someone to tell me to quit being a baby, that Vista will work just fine for me and I won't have many problems at all. (so just go ahead and buy it already). I guess FUD does work sometimes.

Just make sure there are 64bit drivers for you hardware and you'll be all set.

Should be, the only really exotic thing I have is a Kworld 115. And they have vista drivers. The rest, Asus P5Q-E, Nvidia 9600GT, and, umm, yeah thats really about all. Should be supported as they are all new enough.

You'll be alright. I've been running Vista 64 for sometime now and haven't murdered anyone yet. So, you see... it's all good.

OK, quit being a baby and try it out.

Seriously, you'll be fine unless you have some really strange or old hardware or software you won't have any compatibility problems.

One thing I cannot stress enough, when you install Vista DO NOT TWEAK IT, that's where lots of people go wrong. Pay no attention to the HDD light because it's going to run a lot a first. Give it a while, maybe a week to learn your habits and it gets a lot faster.

You will be shocked how well Vista (32 or 64) recognizes your hardware. I feel out of my chair when I installed it for the first time. It found everything and then with the updates brought it all to the newest drivers if there were any. It was so smooth ? I thought I was going to spend a weekend doing this ? had all my drivers ready on a CD/DVD and USB drive. Had copious amounts of alcohol ready for the inevitable stress? but it never came.

I was the strongest proponent of XP over Vista. Swore I would never go there. Then watched my gf on her Laptop that came with Vista have absolutely no issues for over 1.5 years, not viruses, no nothing which I was fighting all the time with issues like that and not being able to use my 4 GB of RAM?. Well not being able to fully use them I mean.

Don't get me wrong... nothing wrong with XP either and still have it in dual boot, just that in the last 5 months I have not even gone back. I also use 8GB of RAM... love how my Vista actually gets faster over time rather than slower as it did with XP. I had heard so much about how games were so much more stable and faster on XP, but honestly with more recent driver updates from AMD and Nvidia, my games run PERFECTLY on Vista 64? just have to run some of them as Administrator. Also gives you the option to run then with compatibility of XP SP2.

Anyhow the only thing I am pooched on is my older trusty HP 1000 laserjet. No amount of work or research allowed me to use that Laser printer on Vista 64. Sigh. Also my stupid Nostramo game pad will NOT work correctly on 64. Both of these things work beautifully on 32 bit Vista but not 64. Anyhow a small price to pay.
