Has anyone ever had to be in the vets office when their dog is put down? I hope they are very understanding of a grown man breaking down like a little girl, because I'm fairly sure that's what I will do when the time comes. Hopefully my dogs die peacefully in their sleep.

I'm not fairly sure, I'm 100% positive I'll be like this.

my sis-in-law had to do this with their dog because her husband couldn't handle it. if it were me, i'd cry like a little girl.

As a Vet Tech I saw this almost weekly. I'd really recommend any person staying behind.

If you have brought your pet to the vet regularly it's really not a stressful thing for them...it's usually the ones with 2" long toenails and matted fur that freak out.

Also a vet coming to one's house may not always be the least stressful thing for the pet. They sometimes can sense something is 'different'.

You have to know your own pet.

I haven't seen many not cry when their pet goes.

One of the things many don't think about is what to do with the deceased pet. Cremation is reasonable...some places do not allow burial on residential property. A vet will sometimes do a necropsy (autopsy of an animal) if they were in treatment to verify things. The animal is then wrapped up in a plastic bag and frozen until a collector comes for the bodies. The vet will know where those bodies end up.

It's morbid, but better to plan ahead than call a week later hoping to get your pet back.

for our neighbor, I believe the vet took the animals remains with him. The dog was later cremated, and my neighbor picked up the ashes ~5 days later.

Sorry to hear it. I recently had to put my 13 yr/old dog to sleep and following thru with it that day felt inside like slowly walking thru fire.

Cremation would have to be set up. It's not going to be automatic. Normally it's about a week turn around.

Hey everyone, there were some complications and we had to put her to sleep earlier than expected. Thank you so much for everything.

Condolences, man.

I buried my buddy in the backyard after he went(GME). This company did an awesome job on his headstone;

Thanks for updating us kazaam, and sorry for your loss.

I try to think of the wonderful memories that far outweigh the last few days of every pet that I've had.

The other dog was not present, we didn't know if we were supposed to take him or not since it took place at the vet. She was just very very old and couldn't breathe well at all and had a bunch of problems. She definitely knew we were there and it was not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Very well done and totally painless. Lots of laughing and crying, but we all did most of our crying on the way there.

Thanks again.

RIP Peanut, my first pet ever. Thanks for the good times.

If you are going to put your pet down, it's best to try and be strong until they are sedated. They can pick up on the negative energy and get confused themselves.

My step-dad's 16 yr old cat had to be put down due to health complications. He took him out to a relative's place in the country, let him lie in the full green grass, sun shining, slight breeze, then shot him in the head with a rifle. Better than on a cold metal table in a building with a bunch of barking dogs. Cheaper too.

You must have a really crappy vet's office.

Unfortunately for every good kill that was owner inflicted, there are dozens of second and third attempts needed.

My condolences OP.

I thankfully haven't had to put a dog down. I grew up with my parents dogs they got before I was born. They both died peacefully in their beds.

The cat I got when I was 5 years old is now in his twenties. I went through a rough childhood and that cat always knew when I was having a shitty day. I'm going to be so sad when he finally goes.

That's how I put down my Samoyed several years ago. The vet and assistant were very good about the whole procedure and sat with me on the floor as I laid her head in my lap and put her down. I didn't break down, just teared up a little. It was weird how all the people including the front desk knew what I was there for - they were all really quiet and understanding.

That sucks man. Be happy you got to be with her until the end. I'm in the exact same situation. One of my dogs will probably be put down at the end of the day today. But I won't get to be there I was hoping I wouldn't be in your situation today when I was reading this yesterday. My other dog is still looking for the one at the vet too.

Why can't you be there? If my dog was dying I'd make sure I fly home if even to take the next flight back out.

That's not how our dog went. They have a quiet private room with some large blankets on the floor, a small sofa, and an easy chair. It is very comfortable and we were with her the entire time. There was no rush, they had the room reserved for us for an hour so we could spend as much time with her as we needed/wanted.

Wasn't cheap but I have no desire to put down my pets in the manner that your step-dad did. What did he do with the body after? Bury it out there?

OP: Sorry to hear about your dog. Having to put a pet down hurts even if you know it's the right thing to do.
