So I used my credit card yesterday morning at a local business and BAM!

is this the only place you have used your card?

when I get fraudulent use on my CC, it is usually multiply charges at once.

The right thing to do here is to inform the bank that those charges aren't yours and let them proceed with their investigation. They know a lot more about the transactions than you do, and there isn't much the merchant can do with the information you can provide.
Anyone know how much they actually investigate these things?
Or do only the high-dollar problems really get investigated?

My run-ins:
- Someone in Russia used my debit card to buy a very expensive phone, which resulted in an overdraft fee the next time I tried to draw from the account, even though I was later told that the 3-digit CVV number they entered wasn't correct. I guess that's still enough to put a hold on the account. The bank reversed the overdraft fee and I was refunded all of the stolen funds.

- My credit card # was used in a city I've never been to. They bought about $200 of shoes and some groceries.

I still like cash for buying little stuff around town and dinner out unless I'm paying for a big group. Guess I am a dinosaur.

I guarantee the bank already knows which location is stealing credit card info.

These microchip cards will not do much of anything to protect your cards online.

I have been using virtual account numbers for any one-off usage. It even makes me feel good going the extra step. A site like Amazon I'll just leave my real number on there.

I hate having to hit the bank/atm. Cash is also too much like spending real money!!! Also, 2% cash back on everything on CC.

It seems to me a lot of people are paranoid and overreact to unauthorized credit card charges.

Who gives a shit? It's Visa's problem.

Not really, because you don't know how they got that info and what other info they might have on you. People who really know what they're doing may be able to dig deeper and get more info too. Credit card # and name and date of birth is probably enough to get the bank to reset banking password, then with access to the rest of the accounts they can do even more damage.

Though TBH, I am probably not as cautious as I should be. For example after the Home Depot breach I really should have changed my card and just never bothered. Though apparently the nature of that breach made it so chip cards are not affected. I did not even realize there were still people out there with non chip cards. When I was 18 and got my first credit card I remember having to swipe instead of insert but it was not very long till most places used chip.

I never understood why people get their panties in a bunch over unauthorized CC use either. If it was being used for autopay in a bunch of places and you have to go and make changes in all if them, then I could understand, but outside of that...

Clearly, this is because of small businesses being bad. This would never happen at a big corporate store like Target.

I've had it happen two or three times in my life so far and it was simple to deal with and my money was refunded (or charges cancelled).

MAKE SURE YOU GUYS ARE FOLLOWING THE WAITRESSES TO THE BACK WHEN THEY TAKE YOUR CARD THOUGH.

Never. Got an invite to join a CAL against Target for their major data breach. No thank you. Only the lawyers will get to see any real monies from that.

My only experience with CC fraud was during a business trip to SoCal about 2 years ago. I filled up the rental car at a local Valero station whereas my CC info was skimmed and used to pull $100 three times from local gas stations (???) over the next month. Received a bill from Citi and after arguing with them (I HAD to have made these charges???) got them reversed. Contacted Valero and they never responded. They appeared to care less. Will never use them again ...

I used cash at the deli today, and BAM!, they gave me change, and I walked out with my Mediterranean wrap, and a bag of chips. The rest of my cash is still in my wallet, backed up by my knife ;^)

This is my preferred fraud-protection method as well. I don't even bother with the knife.

I honestly don't think they investigate anything under your daily limit, even atm withdrawals with pin.
I asked a girl I work with why she changed her direct deposit practically every other month. She explained the process to get free money from the bank. She would go use a non branch atm, block the atm camera or wear a disguise, and withdraw money. File a stolen card chargeback & wait for the new one. Three times per bank she did this for $300 - $500 each time. I know she changed her account info at least 3 times before she got transferred to another location.

credit cards are awesome because of zero fraud liability and additional purchase protections. i've only had cards compromised twice in the last decade or so, and they were both easy fixes.

Technically it's your banks problem

I don't really consider them my bank, so it's easier to not care.

The credit union account where I get direct deposits and pay bills from doesn't have a credit card connected to it. Only a very seldom used ATM card for the times some asshole will only take cash.

Various credit cards are used for specific purposes. One for daily use. One for travel. One for nonrecurring expenses (car repairs, etc.). One backup card. I like the simplicity of being able to compartmentalize expenses and knowing that if one is compromised it won't change my habits.

Depends. If it's a debit card it could very well be your problem. That is your money, not visa's money.

That's why I never use debit cards (sock drawer for life yo). If I need cash I can go to my bank and ask them. All I need is my information/drivers license/credit card.

Have you ever heard of a 'Triangle Scam'?

This is what happened to me; (follow closely)

I purchased an item on eBay, paid using PayPal. When the item arrived, it came directly to me from Cabela's. I noticed the receipt inside was for more than I had paid and was charged to the credit card of a lady out in California (not the seller from eBay).

After hours on the phone, mostly with unhelpful people on the other side of the world (Cabela's reps were the best and told me about the 'triangle schemes'), I was refunded my money by PayPal.

Turns out the scammer was out of Vietnam or at least that is where Paypal sent the payment. The thief had hijacked the original eBay account (I called them also, older couple with a seldom used account. They were not involved and had no idea what was going on until I explained this mess to them). Scammer fraudulently used the California lady's credit card, purchased the item from Cabela's, had it sent directly to me (making it look like I had fraudulently used the CC).

Victims (much more than a 'triangle');
1)Me 2)Paypal 3)Lady in California 4)CC company 5)Cabela's 6)eBay 7) General Public (we all pay higher prices in the end to cover thief)

Apparently, this convoluted crime is a common occurrence, news to me.

Cabela's gave me a deal on the item, not as good as the original eBay list but I took it so I wouldn't have to pay to return the item. The older couple canceled their eBay account. The California lady had her CC charges reversed and closed her account. The thief's Paypal account was closed (he was in the process of doing several other scams).

Some posters think people shouldn't be concerned about CC theft? Amazing!
Do you not get concerned if your neighbor is being robbed, how about you mom?
As I said before, we all pay in the end to cover thief. Merchants don't absorbed the cost, they pass it on to us. As a (unnecessary) cost of doing business, they raise prices.
We ALL pay, get concerned.

Pretty stupid of her to admit to the crimes she is committing and then lay out for you exactly what she is doing.

Banks have for years keep a central index of who opens accounts (and where and when) for several purposes. One is to reject applicants who continually bounce checks (they are a lot of headache and risk for the bank, even beyond the NSF check fees they get) and the other is to catch scammers like this.

Sooner or later your acquaintance is going to end up with a felony conviction.

You seem to confuse the difference between the total effect of credit card theft and its effect on an individual. Still, I don't give a shit about either.

Neither do I concern myself about someone stealing my/my neighbor's/my mom's stuff. We all have insurance and too much crap we don't need anyway. Just don't hurt my cat.

The confusion seems to be what constitutes a decent human being, and a thoughtless douchebag.
