So I wake up from a nap and my PC never gets a video signal again

Hello,

Just yesterday I go to take a nap and my PC is on as always. When I get up, the PC is still on but the screen is in sleep mode. I move the mouse, nothing. Push buttons on the keyboard, nothing. So I assume it hard froze for some random reason, which it really never, ever does. I physically turn it off, and I never get a video signal again

I have no clue what happened. Nothing major has changed physically on the PC for months, nor has it even moved. I installed the Catalyst 5.9 drivers a couple days ago but they worked fine and I refuse to believe that has anything to do with it. I've cracked open the case and the HDD's and optical drives sound fine. I've taken all my PCI cards out, taken the power cords out of all the drives, and even pulled one of the RAM sticks, still no video signal.

So I think it's my Radeon 9800Pro, but I can't be 100% sure since I don't have a spare AGP card lying around. I know it's not my monitor because I have a VGA adaptor for my Xbox and that works fine. So do you think my Radeon just upped and died, just like that? I've never had anything like that happen before but I can't fathom what else it could be. The mobo's AGP slot?

Any help would be appreciated!

You tried reseting CMOS, right?

Do you by chance have an nforce2 board? You might want to check the capacitors to see if they're leaking.

It would look like this.

Ironically, I had much the same thing happen to me a couple of days ago, with a 9800 Pro card. In my case the computer just shut itself off in the middle of a Photoshop batch routine, and never sent a display signal to the monitor again. I swapped a new AGP card in- I got a video signal for a few minutes and could access the desktop but I had the same problem when I rebooted. So I'm guessing it's your motherboard.

I have a Dell SC400. I have not tried resetting the CMOS nor rebooting in safe mode, but for the latter, I can't imagine doing so if I never get a video signal. Not even post.

As for the CMOS, do you guys think its a legit idea to attempt?

That's pretty much your only option if it doesn't boot up before you start changing hardware around....

Well I put some nvidia geforce something...5200 maybe?

It worked right away. So my 9800Pro is just up and dead, just like that?

Sounds like it; is it under warranty still?

You might want to try it one more time, just in case it needed reseating.

Weird, same thing has happened to my 9800 Pro I THINK. Turned on computer this morning no video signal. Swapped out RAM, no go. Went out bought a new motherboard, still no go. I don't have a spare AGP card, but I am going to buy one tommorow and see if the vid card just up and died.

Well I just submitted a 'ticket' at their website, so we will see what happens.

I had a similar problem with a leadtek 6600GT but in my case i could reboot and I'd get a signal and then after some period of time I'd lose signal again. I RMA'd my video card and I haven't had a problem since. Definitely the video card.

I experienced this problem before on my son's system. The culprit was the missing 12 volt power supply connector to the mobo. The problem started showing up after upgrading his video card to a 9600XT. Re-connecting the 12 mobo power supply fix the problem. If you already have the 12V power connector connected, the it's most likely the PSU is the problem.

Some of the radeon drives have caused no signal loss issues, there is a huge thread on it in rage3d.

I would suggest you also try going back to some old driver revisions and try it again.

Couple you also please post your complete specs of your system.

Went ot Best Buy and purchased a X700 Pro plugged it in and the computer runs fine. Guess the card just died? Does anyone know how to check warranty status at ATI?
