OMG, I just tried Expose out.. BEST FEATURE EVER.
Yup! All my friends drool over this feature.

Now that I have Expose, I've changed around my multi-tasking habits. I never minimize any windows to the dock unless I absolutely know I won't work on it. I just leave everything open and expose between them all. It's great. Also, I now hide the dock since it's only useful for launching apps. So i can eek that much more real estate out of my iBook's 1024x768 screen. But having a dozen or so windows open at a time really taxes my lowly iBook. Expose works fast, but now fluidly and I'm a stickler for perfection. I was wondering how smoothly the animation ran on other systems. I'm desperately trying to hold out upgrading until the Powerbook G5s come out but I may just need a stopgap iBook G4 I'm a little worried the graphics chip is still a bit underpowered though.
How fast is your iBook? Exposé on an iBook G3 500 with Rage 128 is quite choppy.

However, on my TiBook 1 GHz with Radeon 9000 it's as smooth as silk. It would be ultra smooth on an iBook G4 800 with Radeon 9200 too I'm sure.

I'm just wondering... are all laptops out of your price range? At $1099, I think the 12" iBook is a great deal and well within most laptop customers price ranges. Just wondering if $1099 is out of your range or if you thought it was a lot more expensive and thus out of your range.

I've got an iBook 700, Radeon Mobility 7500 16MB and 640MB RAM over here. It's smooth as silk with about 4 windows. Performance quickly degrades to Macromedia Flash-level animation frame rates though! I typically have 10 windows open:
-maximized Safari screen
-80% screen size Mail.app
-terminal
-80% screen size iCal
-80% screen size Address book
-80% screen size Xchat Aqua
-100% screen size iTunes
-60% screen size Finder
-Proteus
-iChat Rendezvous
-800x600 Virtual PC screen (running XP)

If I had to put a number on the framerate, I would say Expose would be getting 10 fps with all of these windows open. But with only about 4 windows open, it is smooth as silk. I guess once Panther is officially released, I'll be able to play around with Expose to see how well it performs on different iBooks/Powerbooks.

Speaking of Mac stuff, anyone heading to a Panther event tomorrow night? If it's like last time, 10% off everything in the store(so cashman, you can get your iBook at $1099-$109.9=$989.1).

Wait, you're an Apple employee? How does an Apple employee not already own a Mac; I would have figured it would be a requirement to own one to work there.

i'm not an apple employee.....i work for the #1 mac reseller.

I have been a PC guy forever........
and i have always wanted to get a Powerbook or iBook, but it was never a priority in terms of money...i'd find new hobbies when i had enough cash to spare.

Please don't tell me the touchpad only has 1 mouse button... (Not very clear on that picture)

Btw, why doesn't Apple make notebooks with a decent screensize/resolution?

One mouse button. The OS is built around it, so you don't need the 2nd button as often as on Win XP, but if you do need it it's CMD-click (or else an external mouse). Actually the time I find I need it the most is when I'm running Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection, but that's because I'm running an XP box over the network.

As for the resolution, I think somewhere around 100 dpi is the best resolution for a laptop. The 12" iBook is already 106 dpi which is a bit high IMO. If you went any higher than 1024x768 on a 12", it would be irritating because everything would be too small. The 15" PowerBook is just about perfect, at 101 dpi (1280x854). The 14" iBook could use a higher resolution screen though I agree. It's at 91 dpi. I think 1152x864 would be good for it, at 103 dpi.

Remember, the OS is actually built for 96 dpi.

Welp, the Night has begun, and Apple is indeed offering 10% off computers or anything else purchased with Panther. If you want a Mac(or Mac product), get your ass out of the house and down to an Apple store.

Edit: Damn, they're giving away dog tags! I want! I want! Eug, get off your butt and get me some

Heheh. Funny you should mention that. I got more comments from cute women when I had my iBook than I do now with my PowerBook Titanium. Now I get comments from middle aged businessmen.

Saying this from a strict PC guy..........

I know that folks who buy Apple stuff are getting a great quality product, as the new Macs have a superior O/S, BUT....... I feel bad when I see the folks in the local (Cambridge, MA) Apple Store as I know they are paying such a premium for something that is 'Uber-Trendy.' I mean an apple iPod for $500, gimme a break. Sure I wold love to have one, and it's the best out there, but not for that price. Comparing apples to apples here, PC's to iMacs, you get soo much more for your $ by buying a pc. Apple is innovative and 'hot' but I still feel like those folks in the Apple Store are getting SO ripped.
