I live in the middle of boring, suburban North Virginia right now with the only benefit being that I have nearly no commute to work. I'm thinking of moving to the Navy Yard area (near the new Nats ballpark). The only downside, besides increased cost, would be the longer commute time and I see a lot of positives for me. Anyone live in that area? It looks like a nice area, but how is it day to day? How is the commute going back down 395 into Alexandria? There quite a few high rise apartment buildings in the area that look nice (and expensive of course), but I want to know if I'm accidentally looking in the ghetto. I would be around 395/New Jersey Ave.

You're kidding, right? That area looks nice to you? Yeah, there are some improvements, but the navy yard area is still a rough place.

The commute from there to Alexandria would be fine. My wife drives south on 395/95 on her morning commute, and the traffic all goes the other way.

Seriously, though, if you want to live in a transitioning area, pick something that's a little closer to safe. Columbia Heights/Petworth are better than that area, and even then, I wouldn't spend too much time off the beaten path at night.

navy yard is still a pretty bad area.. and 395 traffic sucks as bad as 66 traffic

ok, so it is the ghetto. Pass then, are there any places in DC that i could get a studio or one bedroom for about $1500/month without living in the ghetto? If not, I guess I gotta look in Arlington.

Why would you want to commute to work?

I don't live in the DC metro area, but commuting during rush hours suck. It's a lot more fun to drive around during the off-hours. It may be boring in suburbia because you are not doing anything.

The one time I was there, the freeway in DC during rush hour was a mess. It took an hour to get from Dulles airport to D.C. by bus.
