I work in DC, there will be a grip and greet tomorrow. I want to have a discussion with them, I"ve been researching one, just curious how to start the convo and everything. Especially the topic.

Look up some recent bills they've sponsored. Find something that looks interesting. See how it impacts you or offer something that my peak their interest enough where they ask something about you.
Then when you actually meet them face to face and get bombarded with "the pre-canned act behind the fake smile because I hate dealing with the public but if I need the pictures for media distribution" talking points you will feel like you participated in a something.

That are read up on some of their hobbies and lead with that.

Worse case scenario,
Talk Jesus and Football with the Southern republicans. If you were in the Marine Corp or Army, mention that. Don't talk about Navy or Air Force because they will blow you off.

Talk health care with the Northern Republicans. If you have a family member who is in law enforcement, mention that.

Talk immigration policy with SW republicans and democrats. If you were in the Air force, mention that. If you were in the Army they will probably start to doze off.

"So, Trump's a dick AMIRIGHT!??!??! What the fuck is up with that guy?" will work with anyone NE democrat and some NE republicans. If you have a police officer or firefighter in the family and they were within 20 miles of the World Trade Center any time from 1962 to 2001...mention that. If its a democrat, mention John Stewart and John Feal and how Feal has so much energy.

Any republican from the NW? Trade policy and hunting.

Midwest republicans? Walk up, thrust your hips forward and tap your toe 3 times. They will say something along the lines that God supports the troops and will turn to the left and walk away. An aide will approach 15 minutes later and drive you to the public restroom and instruct you to go to the stall on the end. Wait....

Midwest democrats? Ask is they have a large family and if they hunt. (It's code for weed)

Lie to them and tell them you are their constituent. They will listen. Or, if you really are their constituent then tell them and start talking about where you live in their district. Then ask them how the session is going and then start the conversation toward the policy you want to discuss.

You might feel like you want to rage at them but being an asshole does not accomplish anything. Try to focus the conversation on the policies you want and why you think they are good idras, not on the way they voted for things in the past.
