Take it easy and get well soon.

Damn.. i always figured you'd be dead from a drug overdose..

who knew you'd be dead from Staphylococcus from a dirty needle

You know, I understand a lot of people just like to rail on zane. He's made his own bed and I like to think that he's trying to get and be a better person.

He seems to take all these pounding that everyone gives him in stride but I gotta tell you, you are one of the meanest people that post here on anandtech.

I want you to take the week off. I want you to think about the words that you write about and to people.

In reality, I am offended by you and how you treat people here.

Is the staph from your keyboard? What were you doing at the computer without any pants on?

Umm did you tell the doctors you are a recovering addict? Isn't it dangerous for you to be doped up even in cases like this where it may be somewhat necessary? I mean it could lead to a relapse, no? Not saying you had a choice, if the pain was that bad. Get better soon. Merry Christmas too, even if it's spent in the hospital, it could be much worse.

don't you have 24 other forums to ask about wobbly M3 doors?

Not trying to go head on head with you since you paid cash for a $20k vehicle in 2007. ONLY those without credit would do such a stupid thing.

BTW my used car cost more than that FJ Cruiser...I actualy test drove one and could buy it, but why would anyone that knew how to drive do that.

The guy I test drove that POS sold me my wife's Mazda 3 in November this year...a few years later.

I really feel sorry for you.

no one is "particularly sensitive to staph."

...it's like saying, "I'm particularly sensitive to HIV."

Get well.

Just wondering, what is worst MRSA or Meningococcal infection?
It depends. Both MRSA and N. meningitidis have many different manifestations, and mortality and morbidity depend on this. Another factor is antibiotic susceptibility. Most meningococcal strains are sensitive to beta-lactams (though an increasing number of strains are developing resistance to penicillin), which are cheap, oft-used, and unless you have a known reaction, are pretty safe. MRSA, on the other hand, is by definition resistant to, at a minimum, methicillin-type beta-lactams - this includes the common anti-staphylococcal beta-lactams, nafcillin in the US (I think that's what you guys use) and flucloxacillin here in New Zealand.

That said, as I alluded to before both bacteria have a variety of diseases associated. For example, staphylococcal food poisoning caused by MRSA is unlikely to be serious, will probably be self-limited, and disappear within 24-48 hours. Just because it is resistant to methicillin does not mean that the bacterium has any other advantages in terms of virulence factors. On the other hand, toxic shock syndrome caused by MRSA can have a mortality of 30-40%, and unlike meningococcal infection, there is very little that can be done, other than give vancomycin or more extreme drugs like linezolid and hope.

Of course, there are several other diseases caused by S. aureus. They include scalded skin syndrome, cellulitis, folliculitis/furuncles/carbuncles, impetigo, abscesses, pneumonias, endocarditis and osteomyelitis, etc.

In terms of N. meningitidis, it also takes different forms. Meningitis and meningococcaemia (inflammation of the meninges, and infection of meningococcal organisms in blood respectively) are distinct, and while they can present together, they don't have to. Mortality ranges from 5% for meningitis (the most common) to 20-40% for meningococcaemia (which is a lot rarer).

Another factor to take into consideration is presentation and diagnosis. Because the characteristic symptoms of meningitis and meningococcaemia typically present relatively late, and it is an emergency when it happens, suspicion of meningitis should be treated with antibiotics, along with a CSF sample to confirm bacterial meningitis. It is important to start antibiotics immediately, otherwise the patient may be dead or unsaveable by the time the cultures come back. This means that especially here in New Zealand, where meningitis gets a lot of media attention, physicians generally cast a wide net, improving treatment and cure rates of meningitis (but also improving false positives).

No sources, sorry. This is mostly from lecture notes.

The Sudan. Pt edu. Is sometimes the only to make up fo r the lack of resources. Other times we have to buy the medication ourselves.
Ouch - buying medicines yourself? Wow.

EDIT: my apologies. Contrary to what I wrote before, penicillin is still a good treatment for meningococcal meningitis - it's N. gonorrhoeae that's increasing resistance to penicillin.
