So I'm just wondering...

I've been thinking about this for a while, but given some very recent events (both online and in the real world), I'm going to go ahead and ask it...

Given that humans are, when it comes down to it, worthless trash (9 times out of 10), why the heck are we folding (or crunching whatever else it is that we crunch)?

I mean, aside from the enjoyment we get out of it (given that we're nerds), we're paying money out of our own pockets to fund the machines, and pay for the electricity, to make the world a better place. Or are we?

In my opinion, the world is trash, to be perfectly honest. I am an idealist at heart, and if everyone was like me, the world would be pretty close to a utopia, but really, I'm just wasting my time. Don't you get that feeling as well?

Honestly, there are a few people here and there that are nice, but on the whole, I've found people and societies are utter trash. So why bother?

Serious question by the way. I'm looking for serious responses from what I hope are some decent people.

I'd advise to stay away from anything to do with politics and just enjoy the DC hobby

First, since I am not the DC mod, I will give you a chance to edit your post. NO profanity here.

As to Gleems post, I agree, I would put this in off-topic.

Um, I fail to see how this forum is any different from all the other forums on AT. Do they have different rules?

I'll edit it anyway. :/

Politics. I'm quite aware of politics, trust me. Not knowledgeable, but I know enough to know it's the perfect example about the world being garbage.

All the forums have the same rules, but I think a few of them are more tolerant of profanity, definitely NOT the technical forums, and DC is usually polite.

Off-topic and P&N are another story, but I won't quote the rules here. Just please be nice, and thanks for editing.

Oh, my fault. I seriously thought it was anything goes, language-wise (in terms of profanity). I spend a lot of time in the non-technical forums though, so maybe that's why.

I actually much rather proper language, but given I was clearly a bit frustrated when I made this thread, I let my own rules slide.

Also: I feel this is alright for the DC forum, since I wanted to seriously get other DCers' opinions on this matter. If I post in OT, I won't get many good responses (and I will likely get a lot of troll responses as well).

Great, OK now we are on track.

My opinion, regardless of how bad the world is I will still honor my values, and die knowing I did the right thing. My dad died of cancer, and I think its worth my money trying to cure it, regardless of the slime that abodes around me.

Yea, that's basically how I think of it, once my nerves calm down a bit. Can't let the slime drag you down.

If, for the sake of argument, I would agree on your basic proposal, then the reason is simple: for the betterment (although in a very tiny way and very small effect) of humanity. If someone is good or bad does not matter; no one deserves disease or untimely death. For the non-biological projetcs there is one rationale:
Knowledge is power - for good or bad, but slightly more for good (as history shows, since humans still do exist) for survival.
Now, being a psychiatrist in the service of the polpulation (i.e. not the rich and famous), I have seen more evil and more suffering than most and I still think, that humanity is more, much more good than evil. You hear and see more of the bad (since it sells more copy/TV-time), but if you look and listen carefully, you will see much more good than evil.
As I said, knowledge (of any kind ...) is power, and man wants power above all; since power means survival. Not that complicated ...

The idea of DC is individuals wanting to do good pooling their (nerdy) resources together to make for a greater good. DC wouldn't work if only a few of us were the only ones wanting to help in some way. DC is evidence that there are a large number of people trying to do good out there even if society as a whole doesn't look as nice especially since evil inherently gets more attention in the media than good.

The reality of the world need never mitigate the insides of a given human who has access to joy in the moment and the capacity to care apolitically (empathy). Cynicism is most often a fear-generated defense against risking and being open when those make someone feel vulnerable and in harm's way.

If you wait for the world to make it OK for you to live joy and the privilege of caring, I think you will be wasting lifeminutes you will never get back.

Are there infinite hot mess/train wreck, messed up humans in the world? Does the bear think the loo is in the forest? It often works back to a really bad childhoods, and humans who never look WITHIN. (Just learned Chris Brown was arrested (Yes, again), for felony assault, this time, on some guy.)

All you can do is make real and honest efforts to restore health inside YOU, with humility and a sense of privilege...and so, be a part of The Solution within the collective. The goodies are IN that journey.

Real power is health and increasing clarity within....never over anyone outside us.
