gonna wait a few years for the price to drop. I went to bestbuy to check them out, but ended coming home with an xbox 360 instead

I'd wait for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy in HD before I decide on a format, let alone buy a player.

I remember when DVD players were out for a little then Best Buy had a Sony single disc DVD player on sale for $200 (a great deal at the time) so I got it and my first DVD (The Mummy). Now I see that DVD players can be had for $30 at Wal-Mart and DVD's for $5 at Wal-Mart. I have over 200 DVD's as it is now so I'm in no rush to go drop tons of dough on a new technology that might not even last. At least when the DVD players came out there wasn't multiple formats to choose from.

Maybe in two or three years when the dust settles I'll buy one.

I'm going to go with Blu-ray unless the media is much more expensive or it completely bombs.... hopefully Blu-ray will be so successful that for HD-DVD to compete, they'll need to allow HD playback over component rather than just HDMI.

I only buy players when they are ~$25. There is no reason to do so anytime sooner.

Early Adoption is definitely a crap shoot. Amazing my dad was an early adopter of VHS (something like $800 for a VCR back in the EARLY 80's) and who knows how much for a Laserdisc player in the early-mid 80's (one of the first, top opened up and you put in the disc like you would on a turntable).

I suppose 1 for 2 isn't bad

Both already allow hdtv over component... its not a blureay only feature.

When studios start using the image constraint token, you will only be able to watch HD via HDMI or DVI+HDCP.

Unless, of course, you don't mind the down-rezzed version sent through component.

Up until recently, HD content was reduced over anything but HDMI. Blu-ray however said they weren't going to do that limitation. I didn't know HD-DVD was as well.

Since when did HD-DVD allow this?

they have always allowed it.... its always been up to each movie studio to decide wether or not to use the ict. most of the studios have agreed to initially not use the ict but i think they will eventually start to use it (when a winner has been decided if there ever is a winner) but i think the first studio to do it will get bad press on the level of sonys rootkit debacle so maybe if its bad enough they will stay away from the ict permenantly.

Since both formats use AACS as their primary means of rights management, they both have to abide by the ICT rules.

It is up to the studios to use the down-rez flag or not. I remember reading that the initial releases from both camps will not have the flag enabled, which would allow HD over component. Not sure if that ever panned out...

If Warner releases King Kong for HD-DVD without the down-rez flag, I imagine the Blu-ray version would work the same.

Well, this is the first i've heard of this. Got a link anywhere to validate what you're saying?

LG plans to have a dual format player out later this year. It will play both HD DVD and Blu-Ray discs so if you were concerned about one or the other format winning out it might be just the ticket. The new owners of the Toshiba HD DVD player are all raving about it over at avsforum.com, some claiming that it does a superior job of upconversion with regular DVDs as compared to some high end Denons and better than the Oppo 971 which I planned to buy when they dropped in price (but they're still $200 so not yet). Personally I want a combo computer drive so I'll probably wait a long time, but I think Blu-Ray will be the better format with immediate support for 1080P and completely lossless audio.

HD-DVD lets you make one copy for personal use with no DRM hacking. Blu-Ray does not. I support HD-DVD, but I'm not buying anything until a winner is announced.

EDIT: I wonder if NetFlix will send out different versions of HD-DVD's that don't have this feature enabled...hmm...

FYI it was Sony's content branch that said they would not be using the the content protection flag initially. Both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray leave it to the studio to decide whether it's enabled or not.

As an aside HD-DVD has a managed copy feature that makes it legal to make one back up copy of your movies, last I heard Blu-Ray has no plans of making this feature available. This makes a significant difference for people who have little kids scratching all their movies.

No, ill just wait til the playstation 3 comes out with a blu ray player.

I want the PS3 for the games. The BR is a bonus that I will rarely use, and only for the films that I really like.

Koing

yeah but with the blue ray player theres no need to drop another $500 for a stand alone player.

there isnt a single stand alone blueray player for under 1k.... hd-dvd is the only "hdtv dvd" format with a player below $500.

Yep, thats why im gonna buy a playstation 3, blu ray player and video game system

Unless Sony really surprises this time, I can't imagine the PS3 being a high quality blu-ray player (as the PS2 wasn't all that great as a DVD player).

Can't tell much of a difference on my 26" TV between HD and DVD. Not worth the price to upgrade to me at all.

Hmm. I just looked it up and it looks like Blu-Ray added Managed Copy to their spec, so I guess both will support the feature. It looks like none of the first gen players actually support managed copy however.
Linky

In theory, Managed Copy can allow the studio to give you all sorts of rights (though nothing like Fair Use) like streaming media from a hard drive, copying it to a portable, making a back-up disc.

I'm not in a rush to buy though, I'll likely wait for a hybrid HD-DVD/Blu-Ray player that has Managed Copy support, even if it costs a bit more.
