Today is the official merger of Enterasys and Extreme. I have been a loyal Enterasys admin for about 6 years now and I have had nothing but great things to say about their OS. Now that Extreme has announced that they are phasing it out in lieu of XOS I am a sad panda.

I just got 2 Enterasys 800 series with XOS and it's a god awful mess of an OS. All of the quick steps that Enterasys had to ease programming via the CLI are gone. It's like having to use VI again instead of Word.

We use Extreme for our core switch and were looking at purchasing an Enterasys switch for next year's budget - I guess we should just keep the extreme upgrade path?

I talked to my rep yesterday, they will be deciding which model is best of breed for each line over the next couple of years. As it stands, the existing products will have their typical lifecycle.

He did say the Enterasys S will definitely stay as Extreme doesn't have anything at that level. Looks liek Netsight is staying as well. I suspect wifi also.

Hi folks, just wanted to clarify a couple things. For starters, all current Enterasys and Extreme products will continue down their normal product life cycle, uninterrupted (first bullet - http://investor.extremenetworks.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=803453). The next generation of products down the line will combine the best technologies from both companies - the migration of EOS and EXOS features to a common OS will occur over time. Please consult your rep for additional detail.

iamwiz82 - The 800 device is actually a special case and has it's own OS (not Enterasys OS) but this was always the case, and it is also not ExtremeXOS.
