well i put cfw on my ps3 last night.

cannot believe how freaking easy it is, i feel bad for sony at how easy it is. it literally is as easy as updating the firmware via a usb storage device.

all i put on there so far was the game manager app and blackbox ftp program. i ftp'ed into my ps3 and snooped around a bit. i saw there are some emulators already out for it. going to check those out tonight.

would be awesome if vlc or xbmc makes it to ps3

looks like there isn't much there yet. From what I can tell, it is not 100% open due to the hacker not releasing how to sign programs yet.

Also I read about XBMC and their team has stated they will NOT be working to bring it to the ps3 with this new hole. They are fine with anyone else working on it, but they have choosen not to port it.

Code for doing the actual signing was released at about the same time as Geohot published the keys, if not earlier. But that was just one early step in enabling homebrew and piracy.

It's not at all suprising that XBMC team isn't looking at doing a PlayStation 3 port as they recently dropped support for the orignal Xbox. They probably don't know much about the PS3 and wouldn't be the best people to do the port anyways. I'm also not sure what state homebrew development is in on the PlayStation 3. The development tools and libraries may not be all there yet.

why dont you just use PS3 media server or something similar and stream it from your computer? works fine for me

too slow for me, probably because i'm wireless (both pc and the ps3) and maybe my pc is too slow.

i do convert them using mkv2ps3 software for a few that i just had to watch on the big screen (cat shit one was amazing).

If I paid for the hardware then that company has to provide the ONLY software that works on that hardware, THUS I own that software and hardware and can do with it as I please.

It has less to do with price than it does performance. A lab at my university finally got their light simulation software to compile yesterday and the PS3 ran it ~7x faster than a Xeon workstation. Considering these simulations take multiple days on a 1024 CPU cluster and no one on the team has PowerPC experience, that's a big deal and VERY useful. For $300 there's nothing that can compare to that.

Sony took that away when they removed OtherOS, now it's been taken back and we have more access to the CPU/GPU than we did before. Sony should use some of that money from their new(er) online service to put some mods out there to ban hackers and such like Xbox Live. The xbox has been hacked for quite some time and I've never been in a bad match.

Sony released a new firmware for security reasons, but it's already been cracked.

If you want a secure platform then you're out of luck for life. Someone will always find a way to cheat online man. Even on Live, and especially on PSN. PSN has been cheat central since Socom 1.
