So, looks like the ps3 is completely hacked.

To be fair I capitulated to your view and I do understand why you need an unsigned device. I treated you like a pirate, which was wrong, but it's hard to separate the raging software theives from the deserving users, and I put you in the former camp initially.

And I also understand why the cheaters, griefers, and to a lesser extent the pirates piss you off. They can completely wreck a game which you paid for with the only intent of playing online, thus wasting your money and time. I just think it's unfair that anyone with interest in hacking immediately falls into that camp until they prove innocence.

Fact is, though, the people that have legitimate reasons for that stuff are the minority, and always were, but there was a lot of people that made a big fuss about this stuff and they always focused on Linux.

I don't think anyone looking to pirate games on the PlayStation 3 has been trying to use OtherOS or homebrew a justification. When pressed pirates will come up with lame excuses the like the cost of games, the profits of game companies, or that the man is always trying to put them down, stuff like that. Most though just don't care what anyone thinks about what they're doing. The fact that they can get away with it, and not face any repercussions, is all the justification they need.

Has anyone done the jailbreak on the official firmware 3.56? All I want to do is back up 2 darn games. Little big planet 2 and mod nation racers are the only games I want to do.

Can't talk about it on this forum bud. Whether it's backing up or not.

it is, but it leads to pirating and other things which is why we can't talk about it.

I understand, and I would like to help, the mods have just made it very clear in the past that if it can be used for piracy, we can't go into detail or anything.

Just an FYI for those who did this/thinking about it. If you backup games that normally have to install data to play, it'll still do that. I mean it's no surprise as the backups just emulate the disc being in the drive, but with the HDD jumping between the "disc data" and the "installed data" it might be excessively hard on the drive.

Just comes from personal anecdotal evidence.

How many people have I met that are interested in hacking the PS3 to pirate/cheat/etc? Hundreds.

How many do I know want to hack the PS3 for uses like research and simple greater flexibility from their hardware? One if I count you.

Sure, this isn't a real poll or anything, but personal experience is always quite influential in forming opinions about populations.

I'm sure any hdd produced nowadays can handle it.

Right here. I've said at least once or twice in this thread that I'd love to be able to run XBMC on my PS3. That's all I want to do with it. I have no problem with paying for games. I have no problem giving up access to PSN to do it, and I hope they ban everyone who hacks their PS3. I just want me some XBMC on PS3, as long as it doesn't take away resources from development of XBMC on Apple TV.

Wait, you hacked the ps3, yet sold it after they removed OtherOS?

Did you write your own hack??

No I ran linux on my ps3 and used it to play games. When sony made me choose, I chose to stop buying sony.

Last I heard, the XBMC team said they weren't going to port it. Although, that certainly doesn't mean that someone else won't do it.

I got into a MW2 hacked server last night and it was actually a good one. The guy set it up on free for all but it was like gun game in black ops. Every time you killed someone you got the next weapon, everytime you died you went back one weapon.

We played it with 20 different guns and it worked great. I had a blast. I am all for this kind of hacked server. I was shocked that someone actually did something fun in a hacked server. I made sure I sent the guy a friend request since I had a blast playing the game last night.

Normally I just get into matches that have these douchebags with full auto ac130's or suicide harrier crashes. If people actually got creative they could do some cool stuff

It seems like such an obvious and desirable thing to do that itll probably happen eventually. XBMC started on a modded console, I dont see why it wouldnt spread to the most powerful modded console of its day.

I would have said the biggest roadblock would be that the cell isnt x86, but if they can get the code to run on the ARM processors of the Apple chips, they can get it to run on the cell architecture.

Still, porting it to yet another architecture would probably be a massive undertaking, so I wouldnt hold my breath, but I'm thinking 6-12 months there might be something out there.

That being said, theyll probably be able to shoehorn .mkv support into either the base PS3 XMB or into Multiman. The cell can obviously already decode h.264 if it can play blu-rays. If there's some sort of API or library for doing so already in the firmware, then even easier.

But I'm sure it will happen. No console has ever been this wide open and not been hacked into a really great media player. Especially one already targeted at that exact thing.

I actually would be surprised if it took a huge amount of time to get a very basic version of it running, and there are plenty of open libraries for PowerPC to decode video (thanks Mac OS X). While the core XBMC team doesn't want to do the porting, a small group of devs will be able to do it in a reasonably short amount of time, especially since there's a version which is partially ported to ARM, where the libraries dependent on x86 have already been found.

...then you didn't hack the PS3 for non pitatey/cheater reasons.

In other words, the number reduced back to one
